PREVIEW: Men’s Golf Take On SVSU Spring Invitational in Kentucky

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan men's golf team hits the road for Kentucky to compete in the SVSU Spring Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky.

The invitational runs for two days, as the Wildcats will strike on March 15th and 16th at the Kearney Hill Golf Links. Golf Digest Magazine has ranked the course as one of the top 10 best courses in Kentucky. It hosts some of the most prestigious golfing events, including the Senior PGA, the Celebrity Players Tour, the PGA Junior Tour Series, and more.

Kearney Hill is located in northwest Fayette County. It is a Scottish links-style course known for its deep sand and grass bunkers, sparse trees, and open-rolling terrain. With this type of landscape, wind is a prominent factor when playing the course.

At the time of writing, the Lexington area looks to have a sunny day with an average of 63 degrees and speeds of wind being from 16-22 mph, with gusts of wind getting up to 46 mph on Saturday, March 15. Sunday calls for chillier weather, with a low of 39 degrees and a high of 59 degrees. There will be a 70% chance of rain, with wind speeds of 8 to 21 mph and gusts getting up to 45 mph.

Last Time Out - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff
The 'Cats kicked off their 2025 season in Wesley Chapel, Florida at the Saddlebrook Golf Resort, finishing 4th of 6 on the first day, but moving up and finishing 3rd of 6 for the last two days.

Northern finished +101 on the week as No. 18 Missouri S&T dominated the course, finishing with +36. The Green and Gold averaged 81.71 for the whole week, having their highest average score being on the first day at 81.49. Full results from Saddlebrook can be found here.

Walter Ylitalo finished first for the 'Cats and 10th individually, rounding out the week with a score of +18. Walter's brother, Arthur Ylitalo, found second place as he had a three-day total of +20. Tyler Annala and Russel Sprecher tied for third on the team, both finishing with +33 for the week.
