Weekend Recap in NMU Athletics: 3/4 - 3/9

Sakamoto takes third at national championships, Men's basketball GLIAC champs and both basketball's earn NCAA bids, Lakosky has record-setting day, and more!

Tuesday, March 4
  • Men's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 1
    • Team sat in 4th at +28
    • Tyler Annala - best Wildcat round of the day, +6 (77), ninth overall as an individual
 
  • Women's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 1
    • Team sat in sixth at +60
    • Maggie Pietila - best Wildcat round of the day, +6 (78), only three shots back of the lead

Wednesday, March 5
  • Men's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 2
    • Team moved up one spot, in third at +62
    • Walter Ylitalo - moved up six spots into a tie for eighth, fifth-best round of the day at +3, two-day total of +10
 
  • Women's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 2
    • Team stayed in sixth, two day total of +135
    • Maddy Martens - best Wildcat round, +27 for a two-day total of +27
    • Maggie Pietila - two-day total of +22, maintained her top-10 position
 
  • Lacrosse - 13-14 OT loss to Quincy
    • After making a three-goal comeback with the game-tying goal in the final minute, the Hawks end up holding on for the overtime win
    • The Wildcats first loss of 2025 - the team relinquished the lead at the start of the third quarter, the first time they've trailed all season
  • Women's Basketball - 81-60 win over SVSU in GLIAC Quarterfinals
    • The 'Cats advanced to the GLIAC Semifinals after blowing past the Cardinals under blizzard conditions in Marquette
    • Jacy Weisbrod - seven triples for the second-consecutive game, game-high 27 points (the third time she's hit that number this season)
    • NMU, 39-22 rebound advantage
  • Men's Basketball - 85-72 win over GVSU in GLIAC Quarterfinals
    • 40-23 halftime lead powered Wildcats to advance to the GLIAC semifinals
    • NMU defense held Laker offense to just 7-28 (25.0%) shooting in the first half
    • Jackson Dudek - 17 points on 7-9 shooting
    • Brian Parzych - 14 points, 5-6 shooting from the floor, including 4-5 from three

Thursday, March 6
  • Women's Nordic Ski - 7.5k classic at NCAA Championships
  • Men's Nordic Ski - 7.5k classic at NCAA Championships
  • Men's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 3
    • Team finishes third with a three-day total of +101
    • Walter Ylitalo - 10th as an individual, posting a three day total of +18
  • Women's Golf - Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff, Rd. 3
    • Team finishes sixth with a three-day total of +207
    • Maggie Pietila - 13th overall, three day total of +38

Friday, March 7
  • Lacrosse - 18-6 win over Missouri Western
    • Josie Lakosky - set a program high in single-game points with seven goals and three assists for 10 points
      • Career highs in both single-game goals and points
    • NMU - season-high totals in points (24), assists (6), saves (11), and clears (18)

Saturday, March 8
  • Men's Basketball - 69-68 win over top-seeded Michigan Tech in GLIAC Semifinals
    • NMU led by 17 early in the second half, but were called for nine of the first 10 fouls in the half while the Huskies had the first 14 free throw attempts
    • Dylan Kuehl - 26 points and eight rebounds
    • Derek Merwick - two trips to the free throw line in the final minute, went 4-4 to give NMU the lead each time
  • Women's Basketball - 73-66 loss to FSU in GLIAC Semifinals
    • Tied 63-63 with 90 seconds left, the Bulldogs scored 10 straight to knock off the 'Cats
      • Final quarter: NMU, 6-17 (35.3%) shooting. FSU, 9-13 (69.2%) over the final 10 mins, including 4-5 from three
    • Sydney Whitehouse - game-high 18 points, shooting 8-11 from the field
  • Women's Wrestling - Sakamoto 3rd, Caltagirone 8th at NCWWC National Championships
    • Yu Sakamoto - 3rd in the 117, earned All-America accolades
      • Her bronze medal is the best finish on program history
    • Alissa Caltagirone - 8th in the 138, earning her first All-America accolade of her career

Sunday, March 9
  • Lacrosse - 18-4 loss to No. 5 Maryville
    • 'Cats were held to a season-low four goals, and most single-game goals against since playing the Saints last season
    • Maryville - 5-0 its last five games, have out scored its opposition 68-9 over the last three wins
  • Men's Basketball - 78-63 win over LSSU in GLIAC Championship
    • NMU was crowned post-season champions for second time in three seasons
      • Team earns auto-bid into the NCAA tournament after knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams in the GLIAC tournament
    • Without Dylan Kuehl due to injury, Jackson Dudek posted a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds to earn GLIAC Tournament MVP
