Men's Soccer lands Four on United Soccer Coaches All-Region Teams

Luca Rosen named First-Team; Asaf Kristal, Alessandro Scialanga, and Ian Weimer named second team

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Following the best season in program history, the NMU men's soccer team had four student-athletes selected for United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region teams.

Luca Rosen (London, England) earned First-Team honors, and the trio of Asaf Kristal (Tel Aviv, Israel), Alessandro Scialanga (Sutri, Italy), and Ian Weimer (Marietta, Ohio) earning Second-Team honors. Among both teams, there were a total of seven student-athletes selected from the GLIAC, with over half of those going to Northern, and Rosen the only representative from the GLIAC on the First Team.

"Tremendous honor to have four of our team members recognized by the region," added head coach Alex Fatovic. "Our ultimate goal is, and was, team success and we certainly accomplished that this fall. However, it's also time to congratulate some of the major on field contributions that lead to our first GLIAC title in program history. Well done to Luca, Ale, Asaf and Ian. All worthy All-region recipients, well done lads!"

A junior transfer from Northeast Community College, Rosen made an immediate impact in his first season with the Wildcats, as he led the team in goals (9), points (22), shots (98), shots on goal (40), game-winning goals (4), and penalty kick goals (3) while starting in 19 of the teams 20 matches this season and recording the second-most minutes on the team among forwards. Rosen's shots, shots on goal, and shots per game (4.90) led the nation, and his shots on goal per game mark (2.00) was second at the Division II level. In 12 conference matches, Rosen paced the GLIAC in almost every major statistical category, including goals (9), game-winning goals (4), points (19), shots (68), and shots on goal (27), en route to earning an All-GLIAC First Team 'At-Large' recognition. The striker earned GLIAC Forward of the Week on two separate occasions, most of any forward in the GLIAC this season, and added assists in both the GLIAC semifinals and GLIAC championship en route to the teams first GLIAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

A redshirt-junior transfer from UIC, much like Rosen, Kristal came in and was an immediate impact maker for the Wildcat team. Kristal started in every game for the 'Cats, where he posted a 9-5-6 record with eight shutouts, 104 saves, a 0.89 GAA, and 0.852 SV%. In the region, Kristal was second in SV%, second in total saves, fourth in saves per game (5.20), fourth in goalie minutes played, fifth in shutouts, and eighth in GAA. A true impact maker for the team, Kristal came in and set every major statistical single-season record for the NMU men's soccer program, along with pitching a shutout in the GLIAC Championship. Kristal was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.

A senior from Sutri, Italy, Scialanga played the full ninety minutes in every match before picking up an injury in the first 11 minutes at Roosevelt at the end of September. The All-GLIAC First-Team defender made a miraculous recovery, and after giving six minutes at the end of a match on the road to test his fitness, the captain came back swinging, not playing less than 84 minutes the rest of the season, including the full 110 minutes in Sunday's PK thriller. On top of everything on the defensive side of the ball and being the main-man on set pieces, Scialanga has contributed a goal and three assists, including a pair of helpers in the GLIAC Quarterfinals.

A sophomore from Mariette, Ohio, Weimer burst onto the scene in his second year in the Green and Gold. After playing 50+ minutes only once and not recording any points in his first six games, Weimer would go on to be one of the most crucial players in the Wildcat attack, as he finished second on the team in goals (6) and points (13) en route to earning a spot on the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention team. Weimer played an important role down the stretch and into the postseason, including a spell from the end of the regular season and into the GLIAC Tournament where he scored five goals and three game-winning goals in five games, capped off with a brace and the game-winning overtime goal against Roosevelt in the GLIAC Semifinals.
