NMU Hockey Roster Updates for Second Semester

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Northern Michigan Hockey is adding goaltender Max Weilandt and defenseman Olivier Beaulieu to its active roster ahead of the series at Lake Superior State on Saturday, January 3, and Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Weilandt is a 6-foot, 189-pound goaltender from Northbrook, Illinois, who is joining the Wildcats from the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL. Prior to the holiday break, Weilandt held a 9-7-2 record with a 2.85 GAA and .877 SV%, and was one of just three USHL goaltenders to have played 21+ games. The netminder had two shutouts to his name this season, a mark that was just one shy of the league-leader, and made 472 saves, a number that was ninth in the USHL.

Weilandt was named a USHL Player of the Week on October 13, 2025, after making 40 saves on 43 shots (1.50 GAA, .930 SV%), including a 25-save shutout, in a pair of road wins for the Buccaneers.

"We are very excited to welcome Max to our program for the second half of the season," adds head coach Dave Shyiak. "Max is an ultra-competitive goaltender who has played a ton of minutes in the USHL over the past two seasons. His hockey sense, tracking, and skating are all assets that will add to our goaltending room that has battled injuries over the first half of the season."

Before his time in the USHL, he spent a season in the NAHL with the St. Cloud Norsemen, where he went 13-9-5 with a 2.26 GAA and .910 SV% in 32 GP. Over his career in the USHL, Weilandt held a 3.04 GAA and .883 SV%.

Weilandt, who was a teammate at Des Moines with freshman Michael Burchill last season, will wear number 32 for the Wildcats.

Beaulieu is a 5-foot-11-inch, 168-pound, left-shot defenseman from Terrebonne, Quebec. The blueliner became a permanent fixture in the BCHL during the 22/23 season with Chilliwack, where he posted 10 assists in his 28 games played. The season after, he posted five goals and 25 assists for 30 points in 54 games.

Beaulieu started the 24/25 season in Chilliwack, posting ten points (1g, 9a) in 18 games, before going back home and being acquired by the Shawnigan Cataractes of the QMJHL after the CHL agreement with the NCAA would allow him to maintain collegiate eligibility. Beaulieu then played 18 games in Shawnigan, playing top-4 minutes and a key role for the team. After those 18 games, the veteran blueliner then returned to Chilliwack of the BCHL, ending with five goals and 14 assists in 34 total games.

The veteran was having a career year to start 25/26, as he had four goals and 25 assists for 29 points in 24 games. Beaulieu's assists totals and 1.21 pts/gm were first, and his point total was second among BCHL defensemen. The blueliner was on pace for 65 points in a full 54-game season, which would have doubled his career-best point production from two seasons ago.

Beaulieu was selected to represent Team Canada alongside teammate Jack Plandowski, the son of Wildcat alum Darryl Plandowski, for this year's BCHL All-Star Game before his commitment.

"Our staff and team are looking forward to the addition of Olivier in the second semester. He's a strong offensive player and underrated defender. Olivier possesses high-level hockey IQ and offensive instincts with the puck on his stick, as evidenced by the fact that he leaves the BCHL as the highest-scoring defenseman in the league. He will bolster our defensive corps, which has also been plagued by injury in the first half."

Beaulieu, who was a teammate of senior Matthew Argentina at Chilliwack during the 2023/24 season, will wear number 8 for the Wildcats.
