Wildcats Fall to Huskies 4-2

Altrichter and Schiller score for the Wildcats, Auyeung-Ashton made 27 saves

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Wildcats lost 4-2 with an empty net goal to round out the weekend series with Upper Peninsula rival, the Michigan Tech Huskies.

The Wildcats (0-12-0, 0-4-0 CCHA) started with a lot of jump in front of the raucous capacity crowd in the Berry Events Center, as Jakub Altrichter scored his second goal of the weekend just a minute and a half into the game, sending the BEC into a frenzy. The 'Cats outshot the Huskies 7-1 to start the game, but extra skater Lauri Raiman, in his first game this season, notched the game level just before the media timeout, and the teams skated to a 1-1 tie into the locker room.

The Huskies (7-3-0, 4-0-0 CCHA) got goals from Carson Latimer and freshman standout Teydon Trembecky in the second period, outshooting the 'Cats 12-3 and taking a 3-1 lead into the second period intermission.

Sophomore defenseman Joe Schiller scored his second goal of the season to bring the game within one as the final five minutes drew near. NMU pulled the goalie, and Stiven Sardarian added the empty netter with half a minute left to seal the deal.

The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 31-25 despite both teams having 54 attempts. The Wildcat special teams had a terrific night, going 1/2 on the man-advantage and killing all three of Tech's power plays.

'Cat Nips
  • Alrichter (2-4--6) scored two goals over the weekend, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Altrichter now has eight points (2-6--8) in seven career games played against Michigan Tech, the most among active players.
  • Schiller (2-1--3) scored the second goal of his career tonight. Schiller's two goals this season are tied for the most among CCHA sophomore defensemen.
  • Bolduc (2-2--4) notched a pair of assists on the weekend, and his four points are T3 on the team
  • Ward (1-2--3) notched an assist today, his first point as a Wildcat in the rivalry.
  • Pitka (3-3--6) added an assist, giving him a team-leading six points.
  • Auyeung-Ashton made 27 saves for a .900 SV% tonight.
  • The Wildcats scored first, marking just the third time the 'Cats have done so this season.
    • NMU scored a minute and a half into the period. The last time NMU opened the scoring under a minute and a half was Saturday, December 9, 2023, a 3-1 win over Michigan Tech in Marquette. Rylan Van Unen scored 23 seconds into the game.
How It Happened
The Wildcats jumped out to an early start, as Ward got a breakaway opportunity just a minute in that was saved. The 'Cats offense stayed on the attack and scored just thirty seconds later. Bolduc dumped the puck into the Husky end, and the netminder Bartoszkiewicz went behind the net to play the puck. It jumped over his stick and onto the blade of Altrichter, who had a wide-open net to look at.

The Huskies tied it just before the media timeout, as a fortunate bounce found the stick of Latimer. He took it behind the net and found Raiman out in front, who capitalized on a one-timer.

The Wildcats almost scored 30 seconds into the second period, as Joe Schiller hit the post on the glove side of the Husky netminder.

The Huskies gained the lead five minutes into the middle frame, as Latimer scored his second of the season after converting on a terrific one-man effort.

The Huskies added its third of the night after converting on a forecheck play. In his fifth game this season, freshman Daavettila won a puck battle on the boards and played a pass to fellow freshman Cicek, who quickly turned and found freshman standout Trembecky, who scored his sixth goal of the season.

The Wildcats got to within one on the power play with five minutes to play. Pitka won the faceoff and tied up his man to allow Ward to slide in and play the puck back to Schiller. Schiller took a shot from the top of the right circle and beat the netminder on the stick side.
Sardarian added an empty net goal with 24 seconds left, and the teams skated to a 4-2 final.
