Wildacts Fall to #14 Mavericks

Alex Tracy posts 35-save shutout, the most saves in a shutout effort in his collegiate career

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU hockey team lost to the #14 Minnesota State Mavericks, 4-0.

Despite the Wildcats (0-15-0, 0-7-0 CCHA) putting up 35 shots, the second-highest shot total the Mavericks have conceded this season, the Wildcats couldn't get past netminder Alex Tracy. The Spengler Cup selection posted a 35-save shutout: the tenth shutout of his career, the most saves in a shutout performance in his career, his second shutout of the season, and his second-highest save total of the year.

Caiden Gault had five shots on goal and paced all skaters with 10 shot attempts, Tobias Pitka paced all skaters in the faceoff dot with 15 wins, and both Tynan Ewart and Zane Demsey recorded a game-high three blocks. Netminder William Gramme made his third consecutive start, turning aside 33 for a .917 SV%.

Liam Watkins opened the scoring for Minnesota State (9-2-4, 6-1-2 CCHA), as he cleaned up a rebound in front of the net on the power play. Watkins would double the Maverick lead on the power play, in a similar fashion to his first, before Alex Zetterberg scored off a deflection in the high slot to give MSU a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame. Tristan Lemyre added his team-leading seventh goal on the empty net, and the Mavericks skated away with a 4-0 win.

First-pair right defenseman Evan Murr (3 assists) and the Maverick top line of Watkins (2 goals), Luigi Benincasa (2 assists), and Zetterberg (goal) combined for eight of the team's 11 points. The Mavericks took advantage of its power play opportunities, capitalizing on two of its three chances while snuffing out both of the Wildcat man advantages. The Mavericks are now unbeaten in its last seven, and are 8-1-2 in the past eleven contests.

How It Happened
The Mavericks opened the scoring after converting on a mad scramble around the crease during the team's second man-advantage opportunity. The initial shot was saved by Gramme, but Watkins was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound.

The Mavericks added its second tally in the middle frame, coming similarly to its first goal. Gramme made a save, and it was Watkins again who was on the spot to direct the rebound into the cage.

Zetterberg scored on a shot-pass from Evan Murr, who found the right wing in the slot, and he redirected the puck from a high tip.

Sawyer Scholl blocked a shot and sent Lemyre on a breakaway with the empty net.
