Wildcats dominate middle quarters, remain unbeaten with victory over Lewis

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women's basketball team outscored the Lewis Flyers 38-17 in the second and third quarters en route to a 66-54 victory to move to 5-0 on the season. 

Northern had three reach double figures, led by Sarah Newcomer with 16 points while Jacy Weisbrod followed with 14. Both Newcomer and Weisbrod connected on four triples. Alyssa Hill also reached double figures with 13 points while leading the team with eight rebounds. 

Northern shot 24-59 (40.7%) for the game and 10-29 (34.5%) from three, while the Flyers were 23-55 (41.8%) overall and 5-14 (35.7%) from deep. 

After trailing 15-13 after one quarter, the Wildcats scored the first six points of the second, including Weisbrod's first scratch, to regain the lead. Reide Osterman added a triple and the Wildcats outscored the Flyers 14-8 to lead 27-21 at halftime. The defense locked down the Lewis offense to a 3-16 (18.8%) clip from the field in the second quarter.

The Wildcats further came alive in the third, notching 24 points to Lewis' 11. Newcomer scored five straight to kickstart the quarter and Weisbrod added a three for a sudden 8-0 run in just over a minute. Hill and Faith Walder added back-to-back layups soon after to push the lead to 17. Newcomer and Weisbrod took over again to end the quarter, each adding another triple to lead 51-32 heading to the fourth. NMU was 9-16 (56.3%) from the field in the frame and 5-9 (55.6%) from downtown.

The Green and Gold won the game over a 14-minute stretch from the start of the second to four minutes into the third, as the NMU defense limited Lewis to just eight points, while scoring 29 themselves. 

The Flyers scored the first nine of the fourth anf briefly made it single digits, but two late threes from Weisbrod halted any Flyer momentum and put the game on ice. 

Northern is now 5-0 on the season, looking to match and even exceed its 8-0 start to last season.
