PREVIEW: The Wildcats Head to Saginaw Valley to Play Semi-Final Match of GLIAC Conference Tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. - After a thrilling and snowy win over the Purdue Northwest Pride on a cold Marquette Sunday, the Northern Michigan Wildcats men's soccer team now sets its sights on the semifinal round of the 2025 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament.

The team is on the campus of host school Saginaw Valley State University to play the number two seeded Roosevelt in the next round of postseason play on Friday, November 14, at 2 p.m.

The 'Cats fought hard to keep their season alive in last weekend's match, forcing the game against Purdue Northwest to two rounds of overtime and eight rounds of penalty kicks before securing the win. Teun Van Gansewinkel and Quint Van Roij scored the team's two regulation tallies, both coming from assists from Senior Alessandro Scialanga

The 'Cats entered the tournament holding the third seed position, behind Saginaw at one and Roosevelt at two. With the semifinal matchup looming, the Wildcats sit two wins away from the GLIAC title. Should the 'Cats continue to execute under pressure, NMU has a real shot to extend its race to the trophy.

Northern Michigan is 7-4-6 overall and 6-4-2 in GLIAC play heading into the semifinals. Offensively, the Wildcats have accumulated 20 goals on 231 shots (averaging 13.6 shots per game) and 18 total assists. Defensively, their opponents have scored only 16 goals on 255 shots.

'Cat Nips
  • Forward Luca Rosen tops the Wildcats statistical sheets with 9 goals and 2 assists in 17 games (20 points total). Rosen has been someone the Wildcats could count on consistently throughout the season. He leads the GLIAC in shots with 86, as well as in the shots on goal statistical category at 34. The junior is also leading the entire nation in DII play for shots per game with 5.06
  • Asaf Kristal holds the second mark in the GLIAC for saves with 92, a save percentage of .852. Kristal, who has been a huge member for the 'Cats, has played 1545:33 minutes of the 1550:00 played in the 2025 season. After big moments in the eight round kick-off over the Purdue Northwest Pride, Kristal will look to continue to be a rock in between the pipes for the Wildcats.
  • Other big factors of this Wildcat team's successes have come off the feet of midfielder Teun Van Gansewinkel and forwards Ian Weimer. On the season, Van Gansewinkel has three goals and two assists, ranking him second on the team in shots (54) and shots-on-goal (24). Paired with these efforts, Weimer ranks second on the Wildcat roster in goals (4), points (9), and game-winning goals (2), second only to Rosen in each category.

Notes on the Opponents
The Wildcats will face the #2 Roosevelt Lakers in the semifinal round of the GLIAC conference tournament. Roosevelt finished the regular season with a record of 9-3-5 and went 7-2-3 in conference matches. The team is recording a goals-against average of 1.18 and a goals-for average of 1.471. Roosevelt's overall shot amount is less than that of the 'Cats at 207 total shots (12.18 per game). The Lakers fell to NMU in the team's most recent meeting (2-1), effectively ending Rosevelt's efforts to obtain the 'GLIAC Regular Season Champions' title. Leading this Roosevelt team is Fynn Mewes, who has 10 goals and three assists for 23 points (.286 SH%).
