PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball returns to the road for games in Wisconsin Dells

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After a successful opening weekend, the Wildcats will hit the road again to face two more non-conference opponents in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The contests will take place Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. ET against Upper Iowa and Saturday, Nov. 15, against Lewis, also at 6 p.m. ET.

Beginning the 2025-26 season, the Wildcats traveled to Pennsylvania to take part in the CCA Tip-Off Classic, where the team secured a three-game weekend sweep against California (Pa.) (66-57), Gannon (60-58), and Edinboro (65-50).

Over the weekend, Jacy Weisbrod recorded 51 points with 11 3-pointers. The offensive outburst was paired with impressive play from Sydney Whitehouse, who added 31 points of her own (second most behind Weisbrod). The two key Wildcats also contributed in big ways defensively: Weisbrod snagged three steals, while Whitehouse tallied three steals and three blocks.

The Wildcats will play their first home games at Vandament Arena next week, hosting St. Cloud State on Thursday, Nov. 20, and Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Nov. 21.

Hear from Casey Thousand

"Both teams are from the GLVC and it's one game at a time, but we are focused on us. We have to make sure we have our stuff right before we are more focused on other teams."

About the 'Cats
The Wildcats have outscored opponents 191-165 through the first three games of the season, averaging 63.7 points per game. On the defensive side, NMU also holds a rebounding edge of 118-84. Heading into the second weekend of play, the Wildcats are a perfect 3-0.

In the season opener against California (Pa.), the 'Cats put forth a strong defensive effort, recording 40 rebounds — 12 from Alyssa Hill. Hill leads the team in rebounds with 23 (7.7 per game). She also has the top shooting percentage from the field at .611, making 11 of 18 attempts.

After being named to the Preseason All-GLIAC First Team, Weisbrod came out strong in the opening weekend. Through three games, she is averaging 17 points per game with a .524 three-point percentage and a .459 field-goal percentage. The standout senior has also grabbed 18 rebounds, four offensive and 14 defensive.

Other big contributors for NMU early this season have been CJ Romero and Sarah Newcomer. Romero leads the team in assists with 14, doubling the next-closest player's mark, and ranks third in minutes played (77). Newcomer has continued to be a consistent offensive factor, sinking six 3-pointers (second most behind Weisbrod) and logging 87 minutes so far.

A Look at Upper Iowa
Friday's matchup between the Peacocks and Wildcats will be the first of the season for Upper Iowa. The Peacocks will also face Michigan Tech in Wisconsin Dells this weekend. This will be the first meeting between Upper Iowa and NMU since the 1979-80 season, when the Wildcats prevailed 64-56. Last season, the Peacocks finished 13-14 overall and 10-10 in the GLVC.

A Look at Lewis
This weekend will officially open the 2025-26 season for the Lewis Flyers after a pair of exhibition games against Northwestern and Southern Illinois.
