PREVIEW: Wildcats Return Home for a Double-Header Weekend

'Cats face conference leaders, No. 17 SVSU on Friday, before playing bottom of the conference, DU, on Sunday

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU men's soccer team will be back in Marquette this weekend for a pair of crucial matches on Friday and Sunday. 

Following a 2-0 road win against St. Cloud last weekend, the Wildcats will aim to maintain its momentum as they enter a home weekend of GLIAC play, against the nationally ranked Cardinals and the hopeful Panthers. The Wildcats hold the fourth spot in the GLIAC table entering the weekend, with a conference record of 2-2-0 and an overall record of 3-2-3.

Saginaw Valley enters the weekend nationally ranked for two consecutive seasons, moving up three spots in this week's ranking and sitting as the 17th-ranked team in the nation. The reigning GLIAC champions are atop the table, with an unblemished conference record of 4-0-0 and an overall record of 5-0-3. 

Davenport currently holds the bottom spot in the conference with a record of 0-3-1 in conference play and 1-5-2 overall.

The team will face Saginaw Valley on Friday, October 10, at 12:00 pm E.T. and Davenport on Sunday, October 12, also at 12:00 pm E.T. 

Acting as a part of NMU's Student Athlete Mental Health Week, Friday's match against Saginaw Valley will be a "Mental Health Match" in an effort to spread mental health awareness. Friday will also be Youth Sports Day at the NMU Soccer Field.

Sunday's match features Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day, while concessions are running a Family Weekend special.

'Cat Nips
  • The team is averaging 0.88 goals per game with seven goals on the season. 
  • Leading the offensive charge are Teun Van Gansewinkel and Luca Rosen. They are both in the top three in the conference in shots (Rosen with 25 and Van Gansewinkel with 20). 
  • Rosen has three goals, placing him fifth in the GLIAC in the category. Van Gansewinkel has recorded two assists, marking him fourth in the conference. The two are leading the team in points, as Rosen has seven and Van Gansewinkel with six.
  • Asaf Kristal remains second in the GLIAC in goals against (6), with a GAA of 0.75 and four shutouts, the most clean sheets in the conference. Kristal jumped to first in the GLIAC for saves (24) and SV% (0.80), and the NMU goalkeeper is averaging 2.88 saves per game. 
  • Kristal leads the team in minutes played with 720, followed by Owen Rutledge (713), Quint Van Roij (707), and James Carr (695).

Notes on the Opponents
Saginaw Valley
Saginaw is ranked nationally for the second consecutive week and second in this week's Midwest Regional Ranking poll behind Cedarville University (6-0-3). The Cardinals will enter this weekend of play on a five-game win streak. The team has tallied 20 goals this season, most in the conference, while only allowing 5 goals against.

Taking charge for the conference leaders is Matty Telfer with 11 points (five goals and one assist). Evan Baker and Lui Ingavi have also been key factors for the team's strong offensive presence this season, both tallying eight points apiece. Ingavi is fourth in the nation and second in the GLIAC for shots on goal per game (2.17), and first in conference for overall shots (20). Eoin Farrell's two game-winning goals have marked him as the most in the conference for that category.

The Cardinals' goalkeeper, Nick Kay, has a save percentage of 0.792 with 19 saves. The keeper currently holds a GAA of 0.625, allowing just five goals past him. Kay has tallied four shutouts and averages 2.38 saves per game.

Davenport
The Panthers are currently holding the last spot in the GLIAC. In the team's four conference matches, Davenport has scored three goals while allowing seven goals against. 

The team's only win of the season thus far came early, in their first match against Ohio Dominion (2-0). Davenport's four-game losing streak ended as the Panthers tied Purdue Northwest last weekend (2-2).  

Charlie David leads this DU team with four points, 720 minutes played, and nine shots on goal. Ryan Sheffer has also tallied four points for the Panthers. The team has a goals per game average of 0.75, compared to opponents' 1.38. On the defensive end, Beau Hudd has recorded 21 saves, (SV% of 0.70).
