PREVIEW: Women's Soccer Hits Road for GLIAC Matchups

MARQUETTE, Mich. -  The Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer team is looking for a few more conference points as they hit the road for two GLIAC matchups against Saginaw Valley State University and Davenport.

The Wildcats (3-4-4, 3-3-1 GLIAC) are coming off a loss to U.P. rival Michigan Tech, a 1-0 loss despite controlling play. The team finished up its stretch of home games and now hits the road for matchups against Saginaw Valley State and Davenport.

Saginaw Valley State (6-3-2, 4-2-1 GLIAC) is currently riding a two-game win streak, over both Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt. Senior midfielder Kaley Douglass was just named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week over the weekend, scoring a goal in both games.

Hear From Coach Egolf
"For us, it's it's keeping our heads on straight, and understanding we've got to show up again and play one 15-minute segment at a time. And if we can build on those, we'll be all right."

Last Time Out
During the rumble against MTU, it was a very hard and physical game, with the 'Cats falling 1-0 to the Huskies. Olivia Gette was the lone goal scorer, coming from a wind-aided free kick that soared into the far right corner of the net. The game came down to the final minutes of the game, with NMU holding possession of the ball the majority of the time, but the 'Cats couldn't find the back of the net. This loss marked the first time NMU had lost to MTU at home since 2018.

Looking at Our Opponents
Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals enter the weekend on good form, riding a four-game unbeaten streak with only two losses in its last nine games, with those two losses coming against the conference leaders Grand Valley and Parkside. Saginaw owns 13 conference points, just five behind first place, aiding to the teams motivation to accumulate all six points this weekend.

Leading lady for SVSU is Madi Bajis (6-3--15), who leads the conference in points and goals. Bajis is on a good run of form of late, scoring two goals and two assists in her past three games. Emily Kolodin (3-5--11) enters the weekend on a four-game point streak, with a goal and four assists in that frame, and Kaley Douglass was just honored as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week thanks to her pair of goals over the weekend. The power in goal is Lainey Garbarz, who has allowed one goal or fewer in four of her last six matches.

All-time, the 'Cats are 18-12-5 against the Cardinals, with a 8-7-2 record on the road. After the dramatic Cardinal comeback earlier in the season, the 'Cats are currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak against SVSU, but have not won a game at University Center since the 2021 campaign.

Davenport University
The Panthers enter the weekend coming off a tie with Ferris State, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Panthers have 4 conference points and sit at the bottom of the rankings in the GLIAC, with the teams only win this campaign coming against the Huskies.

At the helm for Davenport is Ella Chatfield (2-2--6), who leads her team in goals, assists, and points. Alongside Chatfield is Sofia Coppola, who has recorded two goals and 9 shots at goal. Bailey Gauthier is the woman in goal, with a save percentage of .667. Davenport has totaled 18 yellow cards during the season, and 152 fouls.

All time, the 'Cats are 8-3-2 against the Panthers, with a 3-2-2 record while on the road. Within the last 10 matchups, NMU is 8-1-1. NMU has not beaten Davenport on the road since 2023, with their most recent faceoff in Grand Rapids being a loss for NMU. Northern is on a two win streak against Davenport, with both of those wins being at home.
