Men's Soccer
The Wildcats opened their season with a pair of road wins. First, NMU defeated Northwood 1-0 and followed it up with a 2-0 victory over Quincy, avenging two defeats from the same two teams a year ago.
Justin Alfaro,
Tommaso Lami, and
Teun Van Gansewinkel were the goal scorers, while
Nils Cedergren recorded two shutouts to start his career in net. The Wildcats home opener will take place this Thursday at 2 p.m. against Lewis.
Women's Soccer
Northern split its opening weekend on the road, defeating Minnesota Duluth 6-1 and falling to St. Cloud State 2-1. In the opener,
Madison Bilbia scored twice, while Justin L'Esperance, Molly Pitorius,
Hannah Kastamo, and
Stephanie Trujillo each chipped in a goal. Against the Huskies,
Calihan Bearden netted the lone goal. NMU will be back on the road this weekend, playing Cedarville and Northwood, both on the campus of Northwood.
Volleyball
The Green and Gold opened its season at the Maverick Invite in Minnesota, going 3-1. NMU opened with a sweep of Minnesota State Moorhead and followed that with a five-set thrilling win over Truman State. The next day, the Wildcats swept Upper Iowa and then fell to host Minnesota State in five sets in the Invite finale.
Jacqueline Smith recorded an impressive 68 kills over the four matches, including a career-best 27 against Truman.
Allie Barlow had 163 assists on the weekend and
Meghan Meyer had a .391 attack percentage. The Wildcats will open up the new Vandament Arena on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Findlay. A dedication ceremony will precede the match at 3 p.m., with all fans encouraged to attend.
Football
The Wildcats traveled to Kentucky Wesleyan for a Thursday night game, falling 33-13. Freshman
Jahi Wood impressed on the ground, toting 14 carries for 96 yards.
Nico Lukkarinen recorded the score while
Michael Karlen added a pair of field goals. The 'Cats will look for their first victory this week on the road, heading to UW-La Crosse for a Saturday tilt against the Eagles.
