PREVIEW: NMU Men’s Soccer Set to Open 2024 with Two Road Matchups

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team will open its 2024 regular season play on the road with two non-conference matches. The team will first face the Northwood University Timberwolves, then the Hawks of Quincy University. 

The Wildcats and Timberwolves will match up in the season opener on Thursday, September 5, at 1 p.m., followed by a clash with the Hawks on Sunday, September 8, also at 1 p.m.

NMU enters this opening weekend of matches after playing three preseason exhibition matches against Madonna University out of Livonia (MI), the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Superior (WI), and St. Scholastica College out of Duluth (MN). No official scores were recorded in those matches.

  • The Wildcats return many key players for the 2024 roster, such as Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin, the GLIAC 2023 Freshman of the Year, 2023 Second Team GLIAC Selection Jan Hoffman, and the 2022 GLIAC Freshman of the Year Tommaso Lami
  • This year's team features many new faces, with 10 freshmen and six transfers joining the fold 
  • The team welcomed new additions to the coaching staff as well for the 2024 season. Chance Vang joins head coach Alex Fatovic as the new assistant coach. Former players of the team, Keegan Schmidt and Bryce Beckley also joined the staff
  • Last season, the Wildcats ended with a record of 2-10-4, and a record of 1-6-3 during conference play

A Look at Northwood University
Northwood is a participant in the G-MAC. This year the Timberwolves were selected to finish eighth out of 11 in the G-MAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Northwood finished with a record of 6-8-4 in the 2023 season. Head coach Stevie Shard returns for his seventh season with the program with an overall record of 40-50-11 in his past six years at the helm. NMU dropped a 4-2 decision in the meeting between the two sides last year. 

A Look at Quincy University
The Hawks of Quincy will open its season with a matchup against GLIAC member Parkside University before facing the Wildcats. The Hawks ended the 2023 season with a 10-5-2 overall record. The two teams met last season, with the Wildcats coming out victorious with a 1-0 win on a PK goal from Tommaso Lami
