MARQUETTE, Mich - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team hosted the Davenport Panthers for their second GLIAC match of the 2024 season, resulting in a captivating 3-0 win.
The Wildcats dominated the match from start to finish, showcasing strong offensive plays and solid defense. With this win, the Wildcats continue to build momentum in their season, demonstrating their determination and prowess on the field.
"We were pretty close to [a complete 90-minute] performance, and I think we did a good job at managing the game," said head coach
Jon Sandoval. "We were not great today, but good teams find a way [to win] when they aren't playing their best, and we did that today."
The Wildcats now move to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in GLIAC play.
Cat Nips
- Hannah Kastamo opened the scoring, tallying her second goal of the season and 13th of her career
- Allison Kroll contributed off the bench, making the most during her 25 minutes on the field as she recorded her first goal of the season
- Brooke Pietila rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the season, bringing her career total to 15
- Irene Kiilunen, a freshmen defender, provided a crucial assist that kept the play alive on Kastamo's goal, helping secure the Cats' first goal putting them ahead 1-0.
- Molly Pistorius added to her point total with an assist, now tied for the team lead in that category
- Sally Patton recorded her second shutout as a Wildcat, making three saves on the evening
- Multiple 'Cats made their season debuts today, including Paige Britton, Lucy Burk, Emma Kastamo, Isabella Lorens, Kira Merrell, and Olivia Moreno
- The Wildcats are now 29-3-7 on home turf since Sandoval has taken over the women's soccer program
How It Happened
In a dynamic play, Brooke Peitila initiated the action with a strong service from a corner kick, allowing
Irene Kiilunen to expertly return the ball into the box. This setup paved the way for
Hannah Kastamo, who seized the opportunity to score in the 21st minute.
Molly Pistorius initiated a breakaway, racing past defenders to take a shot, but the goalkeeper made the save. Quick to react,
Allison Kroll hustled in for the rebound and scored in the 34th minute, with Pistorius credited for the assist.
At halftime, the Wildcats are dominating the match, outshooting the Panthers 12 to 2. Of those shots, 5 are on target, while the Panthers have only managed 1 on goal from their 2 attempts. Additionally, the Wildcats had 3 more corner kicks than the Panthers while only having committed 4 fouls compared to the Panthers' 8.
Brooke Peitila struck from just outside the box, powering the ball into the bottom right corner to score in the 65th minute. This goal extended the Wildcats' lead to 3-0.
Davenport player Madison Fant managed to slide the ball past
Sally Patton, sending it out of reach and toward the left post. Just as it looked poised to find the net,
Maria Storm stepped in at the last moment, clearing the ball away to preserve the clean sheet.
