L'Esperance Equalizes Late, 'Cats Draw 1-1 to Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Wildcats closed out its weekend road trip downstate with a clash against Northwood, a meeting that resulted in a 1-1 draw despite playing on the front foot for the entire match.

From the opening whistle the Wildcats played with tenacity through relentless back-and-forth action, outshooting Northwood 24-2 with eight on target to Northwood's two, including six shots from inside the penalty area to Northwood's zero.

Northwood took a lead with a goal half an hour into the contest, but the Cats refused to give up. Despite several near misses throughout the contest, the Cats finally equalized in the 84th minute with a decisive goal from Justina L'Esperance, ensuring the game ended in a hard-fought 1-1 tie.

The Wildcats now move to 2-1-1 overall and now have its sights set on the first home matchup of the season next weekend, where the Green and Gold welcomes Grand Valley State and Davenport.

Cat Nips
  • After missing all of last season due to injury, Justina L'Esperance has been on a tear for the Wildcats, scoring her third goal and seventh point in her first three games
  • Sally Patton started between the pipes again, making one save from two that were on target
  • Along with Patton, Brooke Pietila, Hannah Kastamo, Maria Storm, and Kenna Alexander all played the full 90 minutes
  • Pietila led the team with five shot attempts, and both Storm and L'Esperance recorded two on target
  • The Wildcats dominated in chances generated, outshooting Northwood 24-2
How It Happened
The 'Cats were unable to break through until the final minutes of the game, where good offensive pressure led to a shot on target from Pistorius. The hit was too much to handle for the keeper, and the rebound landed right to L'Esperance who made no mistake in depositing the ball to the back of the back of the net to tie the game when it mattered the most.

Up Next
The Cats' will enjoy home-field advantage as they face Grand Valley next weekend, followed by a matchup against Davenport
