Northwood hands Northern Michigan first loss of season, 68-50

MIDLAND, Mich. - The No. 22 Northern Michigan women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling at Northwood 68-50 on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats are now 8-1 while the Timberwolves picked up its second top-25 victory to move to 3-7. 

Leading 30-25 at the half, the Wildcats struggled in the second, shooting just 6-35 (17.4%). The Timberwolves scored the first 12 in the second half to take the lead and didn't look back, outscoring NMU 26-8 in the third and 43-20 over the final 20 minutes. The Timberwolves were 14-26 (53.8%) from the floor in the second half. 

Jacy Weisbrod led all scorers and tied her season-high with 27 points on a 10-19 shooting clip. She shot 6-12 from three and now has three or more triples in all but two games this season. Her season average now sits at 16.7 points per game, good for second in the GLIAC.

Northwood's duo of Lea Holmes (23 points) and Maddie Voelker (22) combined for 45 points on 16-25 (64.0%) shooting. Holmes pulled down 14 rebounds to lead a 46-34 advantage on the glass and a 38-20 points in the paint edge for the home team. 

The Wildcats led 16-14 after the first, with Weisbrod connecting on three triples for 11 points. A lot of back-and-forth ensued in the second, but another three from Weisbrod in the final seconds gave NMU the 20-25 halftime edge. 

The third quarter belonged to the Timberwolves, outscoring Northern 26-8 with a 17-5 rebounding advantage. NMU shot just 3-18 (16.7%). 

The Green and Gold offense couldn't get going in the final frame and Northwood stayed hot to hand the Wildcats its first loss of the season. The Timberwolves were 14-15 (93.3%) from the charity stripe in the second half and 18-19 (94.7%) for the game.

Northern will look to bounce back on Sunday, as they head to Ashland to take on the No. 21 Eagles in a top-25 matchup.
