LEMONT, Ill. - The NMU men's golf team traveled to Illinois to compete in the Flyers Fall Intercollegiate at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club, hosted by Lewis University. The tournament featured a competitive field of 17 teams, with the Wildcats finishing in 13th place after day one.
"Tough day on some tough courses," said head coach
Ben Johnson, as both the men's and women's teams are competing in the same event on different courses at the Cog Hill Country Club. "We'll come back prepared to make a leap tomorrow."
Playing on course #4, the Dubsdread course played an average score of 79.76 through 96 rounds played.
Walter Ylitalo led the Cats and finished individually tied for 13th with a score of 74 (+2). His performance featured a single birdie on the 369-yard par four 10th, but it was his consistency in carding pars that ultimately provided him with a competitive edge, as his 14 pars were the most of the field. Walt played the par-fours well, finishing round one T5 on par four scoring (+1).
Levi Pennala competed as an individual, and his score did not count toward the team's total. Levi shot a 76 (+4) in his opening round, which started with a +5 in his opening 11 holes before bouncing back, shooting -1 in his final seven holes. Levi's 13 pars were only one behind teammate Ylitalo for the lead.
Tyler Annala was the second-leading team scorer for the Wildcats, finishing with a score of 77 (+5), which included four birdies and seven pars, and earned him a spot in 27th place. Annala's four birdies were only two away from the field lead of six.
Eric Yun recorded a score of 82 (+10), featuring one birdie on the par five 11th. His round included a total of eight pars, contributing to his overall performance, which placed him tied for 62nd in the tournament.
Joe Luke carded a score of 83 (+11) to round out the 'Cats scoring. Luke birdied the 600-yard par five 9th and 565-yard par five 11th.
Arthur Ylitalo scored an 87 (+15), sits fifth on the team and 87th individually.
