How It Happened
1st Period
The 'Cats opened the scoring for the second straight night, as Funk snuck his way behind the Laker defenseman and gained great positioning at the far post. Michaelis found Funk with a nifty pass from the right half-wall, and Funk was strong on the puck to redirect it into the empty net past Langenegger.
The 'Cats skated to the locker room with a 1-0 lead after a fast-paced first 20 minutes. The 'Cats had the lead on the score sheet and killed the only infraction of the period, but were outshot 15-9 by the Lakers. Faceoffs were relatively even at 7-6 in favor of NMU, and both teams blocked four shots.
2nd Period
After 20 shots on target, the Lakers were able to solve Glockner and tie the game from an odd-man rush opportunity. A minute later, the Lakers shovel a puck toward the net that somehow sneaks past Glockner to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the blink of an eye.
The Lakers scored three times in the second period for the second straight night, as a shot from the point hit an NMU defender's skate and redirected past Glockner to give the Lakers three goals in the final five minutes and a 3-1 lead going into the final 20 minutes.
The 'Cats led with 13 shots to LSSU's 11, won 13 faceoffs to six, and blocked five shots to four.
3rd Period
The Lakers were awarded a power play immediately to start the final frame, and a deflection in front of the net beat Glockner under the glove hand to extend the 'Cats lead to 4-1 two minutes in.
Marx Noren corralled a puck in the slot, turned and fired from the hash marks, and beat the Lake State netminder for his third of the season, getting the 'Cats back within two.
Lake State scored on the empty net to regain the three-goal cushion and skated to a 5-2 win.
