Men's Soccer Set for Crucial GLIAC Road Trip

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team (2-3-1 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) takes to the road this weekend, with its sights set on matches against GLIAC foes Purdue Northwest and Parkside. 

The Wildcats kick-off against Purdue Northwest (3-0-3 overall, 0-0-1 GLIAC) on Friday, September 22, at 4 p.m., followed by the match against Parkside (2-1-2 0verall, 0-0-1 GLIAC) on Sunday, September 24, at 3:30 p.m.

This is a big weekend of the Wildcats, who currently sit at third in the GLIAC table with three points. The 'cats are trailed closely by Purdue Northwest at fourth and Parkside at fifth, both clubs with one point, making this weekend a very crucial trip.

  • Goalkeeper Florian Palmowski is second in the conference for saves (26), second in save percentage (.788), and third in goals against average (1.17)
  • Jan Hoffman leads the Wildcats in points (1g, 1a) through the first 6 matches. Jan leads the GLIAC in shots with 17. 
  • Aside from the keeper, Jan Hoffmann and Kalvin Glodz lead the Wildcats in minutes played with 510 and 508. 
  • As a team the Wildcats are second in the GLIAC in shots (64) and have the second best goals against with 7. 
Last Week
The Wildcats stayed at home last weekend to face off against the Davenport Panthers defeating them in a 1-0 decision, before facing the Saginaw Valley Cardinals, dropping the match by a 0-1 decision. 

In the match against the Panthers, goal-keeper Florian Palmowski was the key player with six saves and a shutout. Forward Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin scored his first career goal and the game-winner in the 86th minute. 

On Sunday against the Cardinals, Cian Tunney had two shots on goal for the Wildcats. The Cardinals scored late in the 1st half and the Wildcats were unable to tie the score against the defending GLIAC champions.

A Look at Purdue Northwest
The Lions come into the weekend with an overall record of 3-0-3, most recently drawing a 1-1 decision with the Parkside Rangers. The Lions Forward, Hugo Lorenzo, has recorded six goals and has been named the GLIAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Two keepers have shared the net over six matches, holding six goals against, a 1.00 GAA, and a .813 SV%. The 'Cats have lost three straight contests to the Pride, and will be determined to turn the favor back to the green and gold.

A Look at Parkside
The Rangers come in the weekend with an overall record of 2-1-2, before facing off against the St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday and Wildcats Sunday. Forwards, Alejandro Martinez (3g, 0a, 6pts), Edgar Heredia Victoria (1g, 3a, 5pts), and Bryan Torres (2g, 0a, 4pts) lead the attack for Parkside. The Rangers goalkeeper, Daniyal Rana, has played in all five matches with 10 goals against, a GAA of 2.00, and a .630 SV%. Parkside made it to the sweet-16 in the NCAA tournament last season, and is looking to further its success in 2023. Similar to Purdue, the 'Cats are winless in its last three against the Rangers.
