Men’s Soccer Opens 2023 GLIAC Competition This Weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team (1-2-1 overall, 0-0 GLIAC) returns home to embark on its 2023 conference slate of matches, with clashes against GLIAC foes Davenport University and Saginaw Valley State University. 

The Wildcats kick-off against Davenport (1-1-2 overall, 0-0 GLIAC) on Friday, September 15, at 12 p.m., followed by the match against Saginaw Valley State (2-2 0verall, 0-0 GLIAC) on Sunday, September 17, at 3 p.m.

Cat Nips
  • Jan Hoffmann leads the Wildcats with three points (1g, 1a) through the first four matches of the season. Jan leads the GLIAC in shots with 12. 
  • Four Wildcats are tied for the team lead in goals - Hoffmann, Tommaso Lami, Cian Tunney, and Erik Lotysz all have one.
  • Fernando Abascal holds one assist and one point to round out the Wildcat scorers.
  • Goalkeeper Florian Palmowski is second in the GLIAC in saves (16), third in save percentage (.727), second in goals against average (1.50), and leads the GLIAC with two shutouts. 
  • Of keepers in the GLIAC who have played more than 270 minutes, Florian leads that group in goals against, goals against average, save percentage, and shutouts.
  • Aside from the keeper, Jan Hoffmann and Alessandro Scialanga lead the Wildcats in minutes played with 343 and 341, respectively. 
  • As a team, the Wildcats lead the GLIAC in shots (44), shots per game (11.0), corner kicks (22), and shutouts (2). The 'Cats have the second-best goals-against (6) and goals-against average (1.50).
Last Week
The Wildcats traveled to Romeoville, Illinois to face off against the Lewis Flyers, drawing a 0-0 decision, before traveling to Crestview Hills, Kentucky, for a kick-off against the Thomas More Saints, dropping the match by a 1-2 decision. 

In the match against the Flyers, goalkeeper Florian Palmowski was the difference maker. Flo stopped all five shots on goal, including one penalty kick late in the contest. Three of his five shots saved came from one-on-one situations from just outside the penalty box, and now leads the GLIAC in shutouts with two.

On Saturday against Thomas More, sophomore defender Erik Lotysz was the lone scorer for the Wildcats, scoring his first career collegiate goal. Jan Hoffmann was credited with an assist, and Flo made two saves. 

A Look at Davenport
The Panthers come into the weekend with a 1-1-2 overall record, most recently defeating Northwood University by a score of 2-1. The Panthers have a three-headed attack, with Vitalis Takawira Jr. recording three goals, and both Eoin Broughan and Andrew Dykstra recording two goals. Two Panthers have played every minute of the season so far, sophomore Cam Power and graduate student Nic Baigrie, followed by Takawita Jr. (359) and Faheem Patel (352). Three keepers have shared the net over four matches, holding nine goals against, a 2.25 GAA, and a .679 SV%.

A Look at Saginaw Valley State
The Cardinals come into the weekend with a 2-2 overall record before facing off against St. Cloud State on Friday then the Wildcats on Sunday. Forwards Jonathan Monney (3g, 0a, 6pts) and Jayden Cameron (2g, 1a, 5pts) lead the attack for the Cardinals. The Cardinals have split time with two goalkeepers, holding eight goals against, recording a 2.00 GAA, and a .704 SV%.
