Northern falls in straight sets in GLIAC Quarterfinals

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Northern Michigan volleyball team fell in three sets to Michigan Tech 22-25, 14-25, and 15-25 in the GLIAC Quarterfinals, ending its season at 12-18.

Northern found themselves in a hole right away after an early five-point run by Tech gave them a 7-1 edge. The Huskies pushed the lead to double-digits at 16-6 and later led 19-11, but NMU battled back with Liesl Haugen serving, scoring the next seven to tighten it up at 19-18. NMU was never able to pull even, as Tech scored three of the next four and finished the set 25-22. Jacqueline Smith had five kills in the set for the Green and Gold.

The second set mirrored the first, as Northern faced an 8-3 deficit despite opening with the first two points. The sides then exchanged the next six points. NMU was never able to string together points, as MTU finished the second set scoring six of the final seven, resulting in a 25-14 triumph.

As was the case for the Wildcats all night, they faced another hole in the third, this one reading 7-2. Northern scored four straight on kills from Smith and Meghan Meyer to close the gap to 14-10 halfway through the set, but the Huskies again ended strong, recording seven of the final eight to finish off the match 25-15.

Smith led the Wildcats with nine kills, while Meyer added eight. MTU's Meg Rabbe had a strong performance with 20 kills on a .543 attack percentage. Senior Lauren Van Remortel added 25 digs in her final game while Evynn Layshock contributed four kills and three digs as a senior.

NMU had difficulty on the attack, hitting just .129 to Michigan Tech's .330.
