MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Volleyball team closed out another home weekend against Purdue University Northwest, taking a win in four sets, 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-21.
SET ONE
The Wildcats came out flying in the opening set of the game. Despite the Pride serving first, Northern took the first three points of the game.
Freshman setter
Allie Barlow stepped in ready to show off her expert short and low set to the front row players,
Meghan Meyer and
Jacqueline Smith were able to send a few missiles into the Purdue court, and the Wildcats led 8-4.
The Pride got a few lucky points off of the 'Cats, hoping to put themselves back into the game. But the Pride continued to slip up, causing the Wildcats to take several points from them on attack errors and service errors. It was 18-12 at the midway point in favor of the 'Cats.
At this point in the game, Northern was unstoppable. Mckenzie Gruner dropped a line drive that could not be recovered.
Evynn Layshock spiked the ball with extreme power and the 'Cats then hit match point.
The Wildcats took the first set with ease, 25-16.
SET TWO
The second set started out the exact same way as the first, with the 'Cats taking the first three points with no hesitation. Purdue snuck a few lucky points in, but were unable to carry on the streak as
Meghan Meyer threw up a brick wall, stopping two Purdue kills, and the Wildcats led 8-2.
After a quick timeout by the Pride, they put some more points on the board, capitalizing on the Wildcat faults. But two service aces by defensive specialist
Caylie Barlage helped Northern extend their lead 13-4.
Northern had top tier energy in the match, doing all things necessary to set up the hitter.
Evynn Layshock and
Jacqueline Smith put up some points for the 'Cats with the help from
Allie Barlow.
Purdue picked up the pace and tallied three points in a row, bringing the score to 16-13 for the Wildcats.
Ania Hyatt and
Meghan Meyer did their part in restricting the Pride from getting their spikes over the net. As the scoreboard got closer to the final points of the set, the crowd was on their feet, the score now sat at 23-21 for Northern.
A few nail-biter rallies had the two teams almost heading to overtime points, but a fault by the Pride secured the Wildcat win 25-23.
SET THREE
Purdue came out with intensive energy in the third set, as it was do or die for them, taking the first three points of the set. Mckenzie Gruner tallied the first point for the 'Cats with a quick wrist spike right over the net.
The Pride went on another run, taking the next six points in a row, 9-3. Northern called a timeout for a quick pep talk.
Taking the timeout was exactly what the 'Cats needed, as they dominated the court for multiple rallies in a row, taking seven straight points, three of those being service aces from libero
Liesl Haugen. The score was 10-10.
The teams were both putting in every ounce of effort, going point for point until the score hit 20-20. But Purdue was able to keep themselves alive, taking the set 25-21.
SET FOUR
A big fourth set for both teams began in the typical fashion, exchanging points and tying it up at 2-2. Purdue was doing everything they could to get an early lead on the 'Cats, but were unsuccessful as veterans
Evynn Layshock and
Meghan Meyer smashed down cross-court kills.
The scoreboard stayed tight the entire first half of play, bringing the score to 11-11. Purdue struggled to recover many of the Wildcat returns as the NMU front row was undeniable.
Liesl Haugen stepped to the back line to serve for the 'Cats, doing what she does best and dropping two service aces.
NMU kicked it up a notch and knew they wanted to end the set, taking four points in a row with the help of backrow
Julia Bouma who dug up every ball. Despite a Purdue timeout, it wasn't enough for them to take the set. The Wildcats took set four 25-21.
STAT LEADERS
- Jacqueline Smith paved the way for the 'Cats with 45 total attacks and 15 kills
- Allie Barlow opened up her career with an excellent 39 assists
- Liesl Haugen tallied 17 digs
- The Wildcats recorded a season-high 12 blocks
