Wildcats and Huskies to clash at the Vandament on Halloween night

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan Volleyball team prepares to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Halloween night, as the teams will battle for the second time this season on October 31st at 6:30 p.m.

This will be the first Halloween night match for the Wildcats since 2015, when they defeated Ferris State in five sets. NMU also swept Wayne State in 2014 on the eve of November. 

Earlier this season in the rivalry matchup, the Wildcats defeated Michigan Tech in Houghton in straight sets. Jacqueline Smith and Meghan Meyer each recorded 11 kills in the contest while Meyer hit .429 in the match. The teams have alternated wins in the last four matches. NMU will look to put together consecutive wins vs. the Huskies for the first time since April of 2021.
 
The game will be broadcast locally on GRIT (WLUC 6.3, Charter 192), with Mark Evans and Dave Ellis on the call. The match will be a "Green Out," so fans are encouraged to dress in Northern green to cheer on the 'Cats against the Huskies.

  • The Wildcats are coming off of a seven-game stretch away from home in which they went 3-4. Jacqueline Smith recorded double-digit kills in all seven and has a current 10-game streak of reaching 10+ kills. 
  • Jacqueline Smith is tied for the lead in the GLIAC, averaging 3.74 kills/set. She also has the most attack attempts within conference matches at 541.
  • Liesl Haugen is second in GLIAC play averaging 5.07 digs/set. Her 233 digs in conference bouts rank third. 
  • McKenzie Gruner's 13 solo blocks and Meghan Meyer's 12 solo blocks rank 5th and 6th respectively within GLIAC matches. 

A Recap of Last Weekend
The 'Cats traveled downstate to conclude a seven-game road swing. First, NMU fell at Grand Valley State in straight sets 22-25, 20-25, and 26-28. It was a tightly played match, but the Green and Gold came up on the short end of each set. Jacqueline Smith led the way with 17 kills. Looking to bounce back the day after, NMU traveled to Davenport but fell in four sets, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, and 18-25. Evynn Layshock posted a career-high 19 kills, joined by Smith who also reached 19 in the match. 


Notes on Michigan Tech
The Huskies enter the weekend at 7-6 in the GLIAC, and 11-13 overall. Dating back to the matchup with the Wildcats earlier this season, Tech has won seven of its past 11.

The MTU Lindy Oujiri with 317 kills (3.6 kills/set). Both of those are top five marks in the conference. Kaycee Meiners is a force at the net, leading the GLIAC with 1.09 blocks/set. Michigan Tech has totaled 192 blocks, trailing only Ferris State in the conference. As a team, the Huskies are hitting .204. They average 11.9 kills/set and 11 assists/set.
