NMU Volleyball serves its way to sweep at Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Northern Michigan volleyball team bounced back on Saturday evening with a sweep at Saginaw Valley State with set scores of 25-23, 25-10, and 25-18. NMU recorded a season-high 15 aces in the contest to get back in the win column.

Jacqueline Smith dominated for the Wildcats, posting 17 kills with a .412 attack percentage. Allie Barlow posted 38 assists while Liesl Haugen led defensively with 18 digs. NMU's 15 aces came from Barlow (5), Smith (4), and three from both Julia Bouma and Cayle Barlage. It was the most aces in a three-set match within the GLIAC this season.

As a team, the 'Cats hit .301, which is the best mark this season. The 40 assists were the second-highest output for the Green and Gold in a three-set match as well.

The win moves Northern to 8-14 overall and 5-6 within the GLIAC. SVSU dropped to 3-19 overall and 0-11 in conference matches with the defeat.

How it Happened
The first set played tight, with neither side gaining more than a two-point ledger after SVSU led 9-6. Working with set point up 24-23, Julia Bouma spotted an ace to stamp the first set in Green and Gold. For the second straight night, Jacqueline Smith hammered down 7 kills in the opening set of action.

Consecutive kills from Smith got the Green and Gold on the right foot to start the second, with five straight points going the way of the 'Cats. That early lead helped Northern command the entirety of the set. The Wildcats rattled off the final eight points for a decisive 25-10 victory in the second, capped off by two kills from Evynn Layshock in the final three points.

After being level at 6-6 to open the final set, Northern went on a 5-0 spurt to go up 11-6, including two service aces from Caylie Barlage. From there, it was cruise control to the finish line for the Wildcats, winning the final set 25-18 to secure the match.
