Volleyball prepares for two GLIAC matches downstate

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan Volleyball team prepares to head downstate past the Mighty Mac  to take on Wayne State on Friday, October 20 at 7 p.m. and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, October 21 at 5 p.m.

Cat Nips
  • The 'Cats are currently seventh in the GLIAC with a record of 4-5. Overall, Northern sits at 7-13. 
  • Junior outside hitter Jacqueline Smith is currently ranked fifth in GLIAC in kills per set (3.44). Within conference play she is first in total attacks (371). 
  • Freshman libero Liesl Haugen is currently third in GLIAC play in digs/set (4.88) and second in digs (161)
  • Junior middle blocker Meghan Meyer is third in the conference with a .345 overall attack percentage while she is ranked eighth in GLIAC matches in solo blocks (7)
  • Sophomore middle blocker McKenzie Gruner is fifth within GLIAC play in solo blocks (12) 

A Recap of Last Weekend
The Cats' traveled to Hammond, Indiana to compete in the Midwest Crossover. The Green and Gold finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, dominating in the first two wins vs. Trevecca Nazarene and Cederville. Going into its final match of the night vs Missouri S&T, the Wildcats lost in straight sets. Northern was one of four GLIAC squads to finish the tournament with a winning mark. 

Jacqueline Smith (21,12, and 13) and Meghan Meyer (14,11, and 10) each hit double-digit kills in each match of the tournament. Smith was named to the GLIAC Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover All-Tournament Team. Liesl Haugen pitched in with 44 digs and 36 receptions throughout the tournament to lead the defense. The Cats' produced 56 kills vs. Trevecca Nazarene which was the second-highest output this season. 


Notes on Wayne State
The Warriors enter the weekend at 2-7 in the GLIAC, and 7-13 overall. Wayne State is currently on a two-game winning streak, sweeping its first opponent, and beating the next in four sets. The last matchup between the programs, the Cats' swept the Warriors in three sets and hit an imposing .385 hitting percentage. The Wildcats currently have a 15-7 all-time record vs. the Warriors. 

The attack is led by Junior (OH) Molly Miller with 232 kills and sophomore (MB) Kayla Giroux with 212 kills on the season. As a team, the Warriors are hitting .204. They average 12.1 kills/set and 11.2 assists/set.


Notes on Saginaw Valley State
The Cardinals come into the weekend at 0-9 in the GLIAC. SVSU sits at 3-17 overall, winning its last match in three sets. In the last matchup between the Cardinals and Wildcats, the Cats' took care of the Cardinals in four sets. The Wildcats have a 17-15 record vs. the Cardinals all-time, and are on a four-game winning streak vs. the Cardinals.

The SVSU attack is led by Madison Thompson with 176 kills, but Sarah Veale (106) and Nicole Sisk (103) aren't far behind. As a team, the Cardinals are hitting .138. They average 10.06 kills/set and 9.18 assists/set.
