ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team completed a feat that has not been done since 2010, and that's defeating the Grand Valley State Lakers.
Angelina Perritano scored early in the second half to secure the 1-0 decision.
It was a tightly contested match all the way through, with both teams generating quality chances through the full 90. Perritano picked quite the moment to score her first career goal, as her stunner in the 59th minute turned into the game-winner.
The Wildcats now improve to 9-1-3 overall (30 points) and 5-1-3 in the conference (18 points), springboarding them into first place in the GLIAC, overtaking the Lakers. The Lakers fall to 7-2-3 overall (24 points) and 5-0-3 (18 points) in the conference, second to the Wildcats.
Goal scorer
Angelina Perritano had this to say after the decision on the road:
"It was a battle, but everyone came out and played 100%. I am so proud of this team and I am excited for the rest of the season!"

How It Happened
1st Half
The Wildcats' first opportunity came from a set piece just over 30 minutes into the half.
Brooke Pietila sent a corner kick into the box that the Wildcats just headed over the crossbar and landed on top of the goal.
The Lakers' first shot on target was a dangerous one, as the attacking player chipped a ball on target from just outside of the box that
Jillian Thompson had to leap and fully extend to punch over the crossbar.
The Lakers upped their pressure in the dying minutes of the half and were able to get another quality shot that goalkeeper Thompson had to be sharp on to keep the game scoreless.
2nd Half
Stephanie Trujillo forced a turnover and sent
Molly Pistorius up the left side of the pitch. Pistorius played give and go with
Caitlyn Trombley and flew up the side. Pistorius fed
Angelina Perritano just outside the 18-yard box, she evaded her defender to get space and fired a shot to the bottom left corner that beat the keeper and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats would go on to shut down the Lakers, earning a massive three points on the road against the number nine team in the nation.
