Volleyball heads to Indiana for Midwest Crossover

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan Volleyball team is set to head down to Hammond, Indiana to compete in the Midwest Regional Crossover.  This will be a conference crossover between the GLIAC, GMAC, and GLVC. First serve for the Cats' is slated for Friday, October 13 at 12:30 p.m. vs. Trevecca Nazarene. The Wildcats will then have a doubleheader on Saturday, first facing Cedarville at 12:30 p.m. and then later taking the court vs. Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m.  

There will be 38 competing teams between the three Midwest conferences, with as many as seven matches taking place at once. The matches will be broadcast on JEDtv ($). For all things Midwest Crossover, visit the tournament page here

Cat Nips
  • The 'Cats are currently seventh in the GLIAC with a record of 4-5. Overall, Northern sits at 5-12. 
  • Senior setter Lauren Van Remortel is second in the GLIAC in assists/set (9.50). Within conference play, she ranks fifth in assists (283) and third in assists/set (9.76)
  • Freshman libero Liesl Haugen is currently third in GLIAC play in digs/set (4.88) and second in digs (161)
  • Junior middle blocker Meghan Meyer is ranked eighth in GLIAC rankings in solo blocks (7)
  • Jacqueline Smith has the most total attacks in conference matches (371)
  • Sophomore middle blocker McKenzie Gruner is fifth within GLIAC play in solo blocks (12) 

A Recap of Last Weekend
After falling to Parkside in straight sets, NMU defeated Purdue Northwest in four sets 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-21. The Wildcats started out hot, winning the first two sets in dominating fashion. The Pride would go on to win the third set after making an impressive 9-3 early in the set. The 'Cats would close out the match in set four. Sophomore (OH) Jacqueline Smith carried the 'Cats with 45 total attacks and 15 kills. Freshmen (S) Allie Barlow recorded an excellent 39 assists in her first career start. On defense, freshman (L) Liesl Haugen added in 17 digs. The Wildcats also recorded a season-high 12 blocks. 


Notes on Trevecca Nazarene 
The Trojans enter the weekend at 6-5 in the GMAC, and 9-11 overall. Trevecca Nazarene has caught fire as of recently with three straight sweeps. This is the first matchup in program's history between the two sides.

The attack is led by Emma Titus with 254 kills and Maddie Wilds with 157 kills on the season. As a team, the Trojans are hitting .165. They average 10.9 kills/set and 9.7 assists/set.


Notes on Cedarville
The Yellow Jackets come into the weekend at 4-5 in the GMAC. Ceaderville sits at 9-8 overall, losing three of the last four matches. In the last matchup between the Yellow Jackets and Wildcats a season ago, Ceaderville took care of NMU in five sets. The Yellow Jackets had three players reach double-digit kills in the match, led by Cam Davenport with 15. The Wildcats have a 5-3 record vs. the Yellow Jackets all-time.  

Cedarville's attack is led by Madelyn Hensley with 209 kills, but Janae Heegaard (141) and Greta Blakemore(128) aren't far behind. As a team, the Yellow Jackets are hitting an impressive .209. They average 11.8 kills/set and 11.0 assists/set.


Notes on Missouri S&T
The Miners come into the weekend at 2-4 in the GLVC. Missouri S&T currently sits at 9-7 overall, winning its last game, but losing three of the past four. In the last two matchups between Northern Michigan University and Missouri S&T, the Green and Gold have swept the Miners. The Wildcats currently have a 2-3 record in the all-time series. 

Missouri S&T is led by Madelyn Mason with 213 kills. Teammates Jordan Burton (191) and Shelby Ply (146) have also contributed on the attack. As a team, the Miners are hitting an imposing .209. They average 12.5 kills/set and 11.6 assists/set.
