HAMMOND, Ind. - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team controlled play from start to finish in a 4-0 victory at Purdue Northwest on Sunday. NMU is now 5-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC.
The leading scorers in Green and Gold continued what they do best, as
Justina L'Esperance (5th goal this season),
Brooke Pietila (4th),
Molly Pistorius (3rd), and
Hannah Kastamo (3rd) netted the goals.
"I'm happy we got six points on the road," freshman
Hannah Kastamo said of the team's two wins this weekend. "I think it was a great team win and overall a great weekend!"
NMU dominated play for the entirety of the contest, outshooting the Pride 27-2 including a 16-1 advantage in shots on target. Northern also had nine corner kicks to PNW's none. It was the fourth shutout win for senior goalkeeper
Shenae Kreps and her fifth win as the starting keeper this season.
"Having two wins and 11 goals in one weekend is the best start to conference play we could have," added goalkeeper
Shenae Kreps. "We want to keep this momentum going into next weekend."
First Half
The first 15 minutes of action were played without many opportunities, as the only shot on goal came from
Brooke Pietila.
The Wildcats turned it up a gear and finally broke through in the 33rd minute when
Justina L'Esperance went low left past the keeper for her 5th goal of the year.
The Wildcats took that 1-0 lead into the half, mustering 14 shots to the Pride's one. NMU swept the corner kicks in the first half, 5-0.
Second Half
In the 51st minute,
Brooke Pietila continued her electrifying weekend with her third goal in two games. NMU jumped ahead 2-0.
Molly Pistorius picked up her third goal of the season in the 63rd minute off an assist from
Rachael Erste.
In the closing minutes,
Caitlyn Trombley found
Hannah Kastamo who netted her third goal this season to finish off a sound 4-0 victory for the Green and Gold.
A Look at the Stats
Justina L'Esperance scored for the fifth time this season to continue to lead NMU in the scoring column.
Brooke Pietila finished off a stat-stuffing weekend with another goal, her third of the weekend and fourth of the season.
Hannah Kastamo and
Molly Pistorius each scored their third goal of the season.
