NMU Runs Past St. Cloud State in 3-0 Win

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Wildcats got their second consecutive GLIAC win to open up the conference schedule, defeating St. Cloud State 3-0 on Sunday.

The Wildcats saw goals from Cian Tunney, Tomasso Lami, and Triston Nelson. NMU is now 3-2-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

The Green and Gold led 1-0 at the intermission, as an early goal from Tunney was the only tally in half number one.

NMU stretched their lead in the second half on goals from Tomasso Lami, who scored for the third time this weekend,  and Triston Nelson, who netted his first collegiate goal, as the 'Cats glided to the finish line for a 3-0 victory.

"What an afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field!" Coach Alex Fatovic commented in the postgame. "This makes 2 in a row, a shutout at home, and a maximum of 6 points out of 2 GLIAC games. We finally put together that complete performance we have been looking for all season. From the first whistle, we were in control, creating chances and making it a very difficult game for our opposition. This is NMU soccer, and this is the way we need to play every minute of every game. Tremendous minutes from our bench rotation all weekend and couldn't be more proud of the direction of this team which gave up a total of 4 shots all weekend and scored 7 goals! It's now time to rest, recover, get healthy, and prepare for a tough conference road trip to Purdue NW and Davenport next weekend."

First Half
Cian Tunney had the first shot on goal four minutes in for the Wildcats. A minute later, Tomasso Lami saw some daylight, but the shot sailed high.

Cian Tunney utilized the footwork for a beautiful goal nine minutes in, side-stepping the defender for the goal. Quinn Putt got the assist on a great lead pass with Jan Hoffmann adding a second helper.

The 'Cats controlled the half, managing five shots to SCSU's one and doubling up corner kick opportunities.

NMU led 1-0 at the break.

Second Half
Tomasso Lami scored his third goal on the weekend early in the half. Lami danced around the first defender, weaved through the next, and worked his way left around the goalkeeper to see an open net and push the ball across the line for the score.

In the 75th minute, a header attempt from Dylan Woods was stopped on a corner kick, but Triston Nelson headed in the rebound for his first career goal. NMU led 3-0 with 15 minutes to play.

The 'Cats held on and cruised to a 3-0 win over St. Cloud State.

A Look at the Stats
Cian Tunney tallied his second score of the season while the assist from Quinn Putt was his first of the campaign.

Freshman Tomasso Lami scored in the 53rd minute for his third goal on the weekend.

Triston Nelson took to a header for his first career goal in the 75th minute.

NMU controlled the tempo of the match, leading in shots 10-2 and shots on goal 7-1.
