MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Wildcats closed the NMU Open tonight, Aug. 27, in a match against the Bemidji State Beavers (BSU).
NMU brought their record to 3-1, winning the match 3-1.
SET ONE
Bemidji State opened up the match with a serve, but the 'Cats earned the point. The Beavers, still hot from their earlier matches, went on a three-point run. Meghan Meyer answered back and earned the sideout for the 'Cats. Bemidji State had a service error, which brought McKenzie Gruner to the line. Lizzie Stark played out the point with a block and brought the score to 5-6. The Beaver held the lead through the middle of the set and went on a six-point run. The streak ended when the Beavers had a net violation bringing the score to 8-14. Lizzie stark found her groove and led the NMU to a three-point gain. The Beavers held the lead and took the first set 25-22.
SET TWO
Meghan Meyer and Ania Hyatt opened up the set with a pair of blocks. BSU earned a point, but Smith completed a kill to bring the lead to 3-1. Bemidji State quickly scored two points to tie it up at three. With strong teamwork by NMU, they brought the score to 8-6. Madeline Crowley served up a five-point run for the 'Cats. With a score of 15-9, Evynn Layshock went in for the kill and added one more to the board. The 'Cats went on yet another streak, earning eight points, bringing the score to 20-10. Ania Hyatt carried the team to the set point, and Meghan Meyer closed it. NMU won the set 25-11.
SET THREE
The Beavers tallied the first point of set three. With the score tied up at two, Bemidji State sent it into the net giving the Wildcats the advantage. Caylie Barlage was subbed in and immediately earned an ace, and the team proceeded to post one more point. Madeline Crowley repeated the same play as Barlage bringing the score to 9-4. Smith made her 12th kill of the night, while Van Remortel followed with an ace. The score was now sitting at 13-6 in favor of the 'Cats. The Beavers tried to gain momentum going on a streak of six, but couldn't find the lead. Madeline Crowley served up a pair of aces that aided NMU to win the set, 25-16.
SET FOUR
An attack error gave the 'Cats the first point of the set. Bemidji State earned three and took the lead 2-4. After a short run by the 'Cats, Evynn Layshock tallied a kill and tied the set at five. McKenzie Gruner continued to impress this weekend and had a strategic block. NMU earned the lead once again thanks to Evynn Layshock. The score was now 9-8. The 'Cats widened the lead in the middle of the set with Lauren Van Remortel contributing two aces. Lizzy Stark carried the team to 17 points with a well-placed kill. Rayne Thompson made her collegiate debut in the Wildcats rotation and served up an ace. NMU pulled through and won the set 25-20.
