Wildcats Drop Regular Season Finale at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University lacrosse team competed in the final regular season game this season, as they battled Grand Valley State on Sunday (April 24). The #8 Lakers were victorious 18-7. 

The two teams will match up again on Friday (April 29) in the GLIAC semifinals. 

NMU ends the regular season 9-7 with a 3-5 GLIAC record. 

How it Happend
The Lakers struck first on the game's opening possession. The defense's dominated the next six minutes until the Wildcats found the equalizer from Natalie McGinnis. Aleya Speas assisted to tie it 1-1 over halfway through the first quarter. 

Grand Valley added a goal with eight seconds left on the clock in the first frame for a 2-1 lead heading to the second quarter.

GVSU dominated the second quarter, recording seven goals to one for the Wildcats. Aleya Speas found the back of the net for NMU in the second, but the 'Cats found themselves trailing 9-2 at the halftime break.

NMU found multiple goals in a quarter for the first time in the third from Madeline Bittell and Olivia Rose, but the Lakers found the net for five in the quarter for a 14-4 lead on the way to the final quarter. 

In running time throughout the final quarter, GVSU added four more scores while Northern got goals from Emily Renfrew, Dayna Carlson, and Lauryn Rygiel, who got her first goal of the season. 

The #8 Lakers defeated the Wildcats by a score of 18-7.

The GLIAC semifinals will take place on Friday, April 29 with the Championship game set for Sunday, May 1. Northern will head back to GVSU to matchup with the Lakers in the semifinals.
