MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University lacrosse team hosted Lewis University on Sunday (Feb. 27), and claimed a commanding 15-4 victory over the Flyers at the Superior Dome.
Madeline Bittell,
Aleya Speas, and
Emily Renfrew all recorded hat tricks in the contest for the Green and Gold.
1st Quarter
Aleya Speas got the 'Cats going, bouncing one past the goalkeeper for her second of the season.
The Lewis defense was playing quick and aggressive, blocking three shot attempts by NMU.
Freshman
Maddi Bast tallied her sixth of the season, firing one into the netting. It was 2-0 Wildcats with 4:38 to go in the quarter.
Madeline Bittell weaved her way through two defenders to make it 3-0 'Cats. It was her fifth of the season.
A second freshman goal came from
Olivia Rose, who dangled her way through the defense for her first career tally to make it 4-0 after one.
2nd Quarter
Lewis got on the board three minutes into the quarter as Carlie Serritella scored her third of the season to make it 4-1 NMU.
Madeline Bittell tallied her second of the game, sixth of the season a minute later to push the lead back to four.
Fellow All-GLIAC honoree from last season,
Emily Renfrew, scored her fifth goal on the campaign thirty seconds later.
The Green and Gold carried a 6-1 lead heading to halftime.
3rd Quarter
Madeline Bittell made it a trifecta on the afternoon, recording her third score to start the second half. It was her seventh of the season.
Clara Johnson assisted.
Aleya Speas scored for the second time on the afternoon, finding the netting beyond the netminder.
Bittell made it four in the game, sniping one through the defense and into the nylon. NMU led 9-1 less than five minutes into the quarter.
Lewis scored their second when Melto Bowen bounced one off the turf and past
Aliyah Smukala in net. NMU held onto that 9-2 lead on the way to the final quarter.
4th Quarter
Emily Renfrew pushed the Wildcats to double figures, tallying her second of the game and fifth of the season.
Maddi Bast got in on the multiple-goal party, working her way into the open space on a free position shot and beating the goalkeeper. It was her seventh of the season.
The Flyers brought it back to 11-3 when Skylar Lucich scored her third of the year.
Emily Speas recorded a hat trick of her own on a free position shot. NMU led 12-3 with 9:31 to go.
Sydney Able dented the Northern lead, making it 12-4 on her first goal this season.
Speas joined Bittell with her fourth goal of the game.
Dayna Carlson was credited with the helper.
Emily Renfrew made it a hat trick of hat tricks for NMU, pushing the lead to 14-4. It was her seventh of the season.
Clara Johnson would add another for the 'Cats, capitalizing on a free position shot. It was Johnson's second of the season.
NMU held on for a commanding 15-4 victory.
