Women’s Basketball Secures Key Victory at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Makaylee Kuhn poured in a season best 30 points to help guide the Northern Michigan women's basketball team to an important 59-51 road victory over LSSU on Thursday (Feb. 24). 

NMU improved their season record to 12-14 and 7-12 in the GLIAC. 

STAT LEADERS
  • Makaylee Kuhn paced Northern with a season best 30 points on 9-21 shooting and a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line. 
  • The Wildcats bagged ten steals in the contest. 
  • Vivianne Jende, Samantha Potter, and Ana Rhude each pulled down six rebounds.
  • Kayla Tierney had a solid night distributing the ball, tallying four assists.


FIRST QUARTER
Makaylee Kuhn got the ball rolling for the 'Cats on Thursday, connecting on a short range floater in the first minute. 

Taya Stevenson made an impact everywhere early, recording an offensive and defensive rebound, assist, and steal in the first few minutes of action. 

Elizabeth Lutz swished home an elbow jumper for her second basket to make it 13-10 LSSU with 2:30 to play. 

Makaylee Kuhn beat the horn to end the quarter, banking in a floater off the window and NMU led 14-13. The Lakers offense knocked down 3-3 triples. Kuhn led all scorers with eight. 


SECOND QUARTER
Makaylee Kuhn didn't take long to reach double figures as she connected on a triple for the first basket of quarter two to give her 11 points. 

Samantha Potter found her first basket with three minutes to go in the half, grabbing an offensive board at its high point and working it to the rim for two. NMU led 21-19. 

The teams ended the half where they started, all tied up at 23 apiece. 


AT THE HALF
Kuhn recorded 11 points and three steals.

NMU held an 8-0 edge in second-chance points. 

The Wildcats forced 13 Lakers turnovers.

Five 'Cats pulled down multiple rebounds, led by Ana Rhude with five. 


THIRD QUARTER
Makaylee Kuhn once again opened the scoring for NMU, giving her 13 points. 

With just over five minutes left in the quarter, Kuhn knocked in her second triple to give NMU a 36-30 lead. Kuhn hit 20 points with the basket.

Mackenzie Holzwart found her first basket to give the Green and Gold their largest lead of seven at 39-32. 

After three, NMU was holding on to a 41-37 advantage. 


FOURTH QUARTER
Mackenzie Holzwart fought through contact and converted on the layup for the first Northern basket of the final quarter. 

The Lakers would not go away, keeping the game within striking distance throughout the contest. It was NMU 45-41 with 4:43 to go.

Vivianne Jende used the spin cycle in the paint to free herself from a defender and push the Wildcats lead back to six. 

NMU went 10-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter including 8-8 in the final minutes to hold on for a 59-51 win over LSSU. 

UP NEXT
The Wildcats will head to Ferris State to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.
