Hockey Finishes Out The Weekend On A High Note

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Northern Michigan University Hockey completed the weekend sweep against Bowling Green State University on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a score of 4-2. Alex Frye powered the Wildcats offense with two goals. 

Bowling Green came out of the gate early, as Falcon forward Adam Pitters cut down the middle of the ice and buried a wrister off a pass from Alex Barber just 1:18 into the first period. The lead didn't last for long as junior forward Alex Frye buried one from the corner, Connor Marritt grabbed the assist on the play. The game continued with 17:45 left in the first. 

The Falcons were caught with too many men on the ice, grabbing a two-minute bench minor. NMU's powerplay looked to take the early lead with 15:09 left in the first. BGSU stood tall on the defense, disallowing any offensive opportunities for the NMU powerplay. 

Hank Crone took a trip to the sin bin at 10:48 on a two-minute minor for hooking. BGSU's dynamic powerplay looked to capitalize, Charlie Glockner was a brick wall, making back-to-back stops to help change the momentum of the game. 

Northern Michigan went on the penalty kill for the second time of the night at the 6:19 mark after Andre Ghantous was pinged with a two-minute minor for hooking. Charlie Glockner continued to energize the NMU team as he stood on his head throughout the penalty kill, stopping any offensive opportunity created by the BGSU powerplay.

After a slow start to the second period, the action started to get feisty as Andre Ghantous and Sam Craggs were both sent to the box for a pair of minor penalties, play resumes with both teams playing four on four. Both teams shared a few shots a piece with the ice opened up but no team could find the back of the net. 

Shortly after the four-on-four ended, Bo Hanson was hit with a two-minute minor at the 11:33 mark for interference. NMU's penalty killed looked to kill off their fourth penalty of the night. Charlie Glockner continued his excellence between the pipes, helping the Wildcats kill off their fourth penalty of the night. 

Alex Frye nets another one for the Wildcats at the 7:17 mark, banging one to the back of the net off a rebound from Trevor Cosgrove, Andre Ghantous grabbed the secondary assist. Northern looked to keep the momentum going throughout the second period.   

The Wildcats head back on the penalty kill with 12:36 left in the third period as Tanner Vescio was hit with a two-minute minor for cross-checking. The penalty kill came out hot for Northern as Hampus Eriksson rifled one past Christian Stoever off a pass from Andre Ghantous and Ben Newhouse, NMU pushes on to kill off the penalty with 12:24 remaining in the third. BGSU answered back at the 11:13 mark, scoring one on the powerplay, Coale Norris netted it for the Falcons off a pass from Taylor Schneider and Gabriel Chicoine. 

The action continued as NMU got the chance on the powerplay with 10:56 left in the third period, as Falcon forward Seth Fyten made the trip to the penalty box for a two-minute minor for tripping. Northern dominated on the powerplay but Christian Stover stood strong for the Falcons, killing off the penalty. 

With two minutes remaining in the third period, BGSU pulled their goalie, giving them a six on five opportunities, looking to tie the game up late. NMU's defense stayed strong but Charlie Glockner laid it all out on the line, making back-to-back stops. The strong defense turned into a great offense as Hank Crone rifled one in the net for a big-time goal with Vincent de Mey notching the assist.

  • Bowling Green struck first, scoring just 1:18 into the first. Adam Pitters buried the puck off a pass from Alex Barber. 
  • Alex Frye answered back for the Wildcats, sniping one in from the bottom right corner, Connor Marritt tallied an assist on the play.
  • Northern gained an edge at the 7:17 mark of the second period as Alex Frye buried one to the back of the net off a rebound from Trevor Cosgrove, Andre Ghantous grabbed the secondary assist. 
  • NMU's strong penalty killed turned on the jets offensively as Hampus Eriksson secured one past Christian Stoever off a pass from Andre Ghantous and Ben Newhouse
  • Coale Norris netted one for the Falcons off a pass from Taylor Schneider and Gabriel Chicoine, making the game 3-2 in favor of the Wildcats.
  • Northern Michigan's strong defense turned into a strong offense as Hank Crone netted his 11th goal of the season on an empty net, Vincent de Mey grabbed the apple on the play.

  • Alex Frye tallied his seventh goal of the season, burying two on the night.
