Wildcats Tame Rangers with Lockdown Defense

KENOSHA, Wis. - Makaylee Kuhn (18 points) led the way for the 'Cats, and every Wildcat recorded at least two (2) points in a 47-35 conference win against Parkside on Saturday.

Kuhn led the Wildcats for a fourth consecutive game totaling 18 points, shooting 8-19 (42.1%) from the field and 1-2 (50%) from beyond the arc. She also recorded eight (8) rebounds and two (2) assists. Kuhn has now reached double-digit figures in 8-9 games this season, with at least 14 in four straight. Mackenzie Holzwart recorded 11 rebounds and two (2) assists to go with her five (5) points.

Neither team was very efficient shooting as the Wildcats went 20-64 (31.3%), and the Rangers went 14-42 (33.3%) from the floor. The Wildcats shot 4-19 (21.1%) and the Rangers went 1-17 (5.9%) from the arc. 

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Rangers 40-33, pulling down 17 offensive boards to Parkside's three (3). The 'Cats forced Parkside into 21 turnovers and posted 12 steals in a statement defensive outing.


How it Happened
The game started slow, as both teams struggled in the first four minutes. The Wildcats shot 1-7 from the field and missed their only two three-pointer attempts, while Parkside only had two points through the first five minutes and thirty seconds. 

Andrea Perez got the 'Cats going with a jumper that sparked an 8-0 run in a four-minute span to give the 'Cats an 8-2 lead. The first quarter finished with back-and-forth action, with NMU scoring six points in the last four minutes.

The second quarter started the same, with the 'Cats going 0-7 in the first four minutes of the quarter. Makaylee Kuhn opened the scoring in the second for Northern with four minutes left, this started a 7-0 run to end the quarter and the Wildcats would go into the locker room with a 21-13 lead. 

The Wildcats ended the first two quarters shooting 10-34 (29.4%) from the field and 1-10 (10%) from the deep. The 'Cats out-rebounded the Rangers 23-18, with eight (8) offensive rebounds.

The third quarter started hot for both teams, as the teams traded points for the first four minutes helped by buckets from Ana Rhude, Makaylee Kuhn, and Mackenzie Holzwart. The Wildcats dominated around the offensive board, grabbing four. 

The 'Cats then found themselves in a scoring drought that lasted four minutes, but they held the Rangers offense to four points in that stretch. Kayla Tierney would finish the third quarter scoring for the 'Cats on a personal 5-0 run, knocking down a three-ball and layup.

The Wildcats controlled play to start the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rangers 7-2 and shooting 3-6 from the floor. With Sarah Newcomer's three-pointer that extended the lead to 41-27, every Wildcat who played recorded at least two points in the contest. 

Back-and-forth action ended the game, with the Wildcats able to maintain their lead and win by a score of 47-35, improving to 6-3, 2-0 on the season. 


Postgame Notes
  • Makaylee Kuhn led the way with 18 points on 8-19 (42.1%) shooting from the field and 1-2 (50%) from the arc. She also contributed with eight (8) rebounds and two (2) assists.
  • It was a full team effort for the Wildcats, as every who entered the game recorded at least two (2) points.
  • The Wildcats were dominant around the glass, out-rebounding the Rangers 40-33, pulling down 17 offensive rebounds to UWP's 4, while scoring 17 second-chance points.
  • The Wildcats recorded 12 steals and forced 21 Parkside turnovers, scoring 16 points off those mishaps.
