Men's Basketball Opens New Campaign at Crossover Tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Wildcat Men's Basketball team is set to play its first games of the season, taking on McKendree University and Lewis University in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge. 

Tip-offs are scheduled for November 12 against McKendree and November 13 against Lewis, both 12 p.m. games in Houghton, Mich.

A Look at the Wildcats
Heading into this season, the Wildcats have been picked to finish second in the GLIAC Preseason Poll, where NMU received two first-place votes and 68 total points in the tally. The Wildcats finished 18-12 overall and 12-8 in conference play last season, earning the three-seed in the GLIAC tournament.

Senior guard Max Bjorklund highlights the returning core for the Green and Gold. Bjorklund has been named the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year as well as earning GLIAC preseason first-team honors ahead of the 2022-23 campaign after earning Second Team honors a season ago. Coach Matt Majkrzak and co. also return dynamic guards Carson Smith and Brian Parzych


A Look at McKendree 
The Bearcats have been selected to finish sixth in the GLVC Preseason poll, receiving a total of 91 points. The Bearcats had a 14-12 overall record and a 9-11 record against conference opponents last season. They return three starters, including a key player in Bryson Bultman.

NMU is 1-2 against the Bearcats in their history. Their previous matchup was on November 13, 2021, where the 'Cats lost by a score of 75-62. 


A Look At Lewis
The Flyers have been voted third in the GLVC Preseason poll, receiving one first-place vote and 107 total points. The Flyers had a 16-11 overall record and a 12-5 record against conference opponents. They return GLVC All-Freshman selection Anthony Sayles and add 10 newcomers for the 2022-2023 campaign. 

NMU is 4-5 against the Flyers in their history. Their previous matchup was on November 12, 2021, where the 'Cats won by a score of 67-57.
