MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Womens Basketball team is set to open up their 2022-23 season in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge.
The Wildcats are under new leadership this season as
Casey Thousand was named the new head womens basketball coach, replacing longtime head coach Troy Mattson who retired in the offseason. Thousand has some familiarity with the program, having worked under Mattson for three seasons.

A Look at the Wildcats
The Wildats are coming off a 12-16 (7-13) record in the 2021-22 campaign. The 2022-23 Wildcats are picked to finish seventh in the GLIAC, while returning junior guard
Makaylee Kuhn is a preseason GLIAC First Team Selection.
The Wildcats are returning 11 players from last years team, and have added a few new faces to the roster including two transfers, and two freshman.
MaKaylee Kuhn returns for her junior year. Kuhn averaged 15.7 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, and 3.0 assists per game, which were all team highs.
Kayla Tierney returns for her redshirt sophomore year. Tierney averaged 5.2 points per game a season ago, which was second on the team for returning players. She also shot 33% from the three point line as well.

Ana Rhude returns, she was fourth on the team in points per game of returning players with 4.1 points per game, second in rebounds with 4.5 per game, and the teams blocks leader with 34.
A Look at the Lewis Flyers
The Flyers are coming off a 16-15 (11-8) record in 2021-22. They return three key players from a season ago, First Team GLVC selection Grace Hilber, Second Team selection Kathryn Schmidt, and Third Team selection Taylor Gugliuzza. The Cardinals were pick to finish fourth in the GLVC preseason polls.
A Look at the William Jewell Cardinals
The Cardinals are coming off a 1-25 (1-19) record in 2021-22. They return some key players from a season ago, Libby Arnold, the teams leading scoring from last year with 10.2 points per game. Katie Knock, who started every game for the Cardinals last year, and averaged 8.3 points per game and added 5.5 rebounds per game. Finally Katie Hillyer who average 9.3 points per game before her season got cut short due to injury.
