MARQUETTE, Mich. - A matchup between the top team in the GLIAC, No. 6 Grand Valley State, and Northern Michigan resulted in a scoreless draw on Sunday.
The ball was unable to find the back of the net on either side despite some quality chances. The Wildcats blasted 13 shots to just three for GVSU. The Green and Gold managed three on goal while the visitors had a pair on target.
Brenna Musser led the courageous effort for NMU vs. the reigning champs, as she totaled five shots and two of the three on goal for Northern.
"I'm really proud of the way our team came in confident and stuck to our game plan today," said senior captain
Natalie Stampfly. "Not the result we were hoping for, but this is the point in the season where wa want to be playing our best soccer. We will continue to get better and come ready for next weekend."
In the net,
Shenae Kreps showcased a great performance with two big saves and being in the right place at the right time throughout the match. "We played a great standard today," Kreps said after the game. "We came out with a lot of confidence. We'll build on this next weekend."
The Wildcats are now 8-1-4 and 5-1-3 in GLIAC contests. The Lakers are 9-1-3 and 7-0-2 within the conference.
First Half
Brenna Musser fired the first shot on goal on the afternoon, and the ball nearly rolled between the legs of the keeper, but she was able to make the save with her feet.
Nearing the 20' mark,
Natalie Stampfly and
Molly Pistorius had a 2-on-1, but the shot off the foot of Pistorius skipped past the goalkeeper and just wide of the net.
A few minutes later,
Brooke Pietila had a look off a free kick that sailed inches over the crossbar. NMU was finding chances, but the game remained 0-0 halfway through the first half.
NMU led in total shots 5-2 while each side pushed one shot on goal.
Second Half
Shenae Kreps came up with the biggest save of the day to date, as GVSU had an open look in the box four minutes in, but Kreps' dove and was able to get her mitts on the ball for the save.
Just the third corner for either side came for NMU in the 59th minute after putting together some continuous pressure. A shot soon after the corner was stopped and the game remained without a tally.
Northern had consecutive corner kicks in the 76th minute, but the lone look was a header from
Calihan Bearden that bounced just to the side of the net.
With six minutes left, GVSU had their second look from the corner, but the Wildcats were able to clear the ball.
Brenna Musser had a header in the box down the other way for Northern, but the keeper played it well for the stop.
The Wildcats appeared to tilt the field down the stretch, as they outshot GVSU 8-1 in the closing half.
