Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Stumbles in 2-0 Loss to PNW

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan men's soccer team surrendered a pair of second-half goals as they fell to Purdue Northwest 2-0 in their home finale.

After a scoreless first half, the visiting Pride broke through in the 55th minute and added to their lead in the 64th minute. NMU had their chances but failed to capitalize as PNW took the 2-0 road victory.

It was the Wildcats' first multi-goal defeat of the year.

"Very disappointed in the result today and how the game went," Coach Alex Fatovic said after the game. "I'm proud of the boys' efforts as always, but today was just not our day. We wasted another promising start by allowing PNW to get a foothold in the match and from there, they took advantage of some good fortune. If we want to achieve anything this season, we must find a way to score our chances and stop giving away cheap goals. Now time to rest, recover, and get ready for an absolutely massive weekend as we look towards a surging St. Cloud and Upper Iowa on the road."

First Half
The Wildcats and Pride didn't create many offensive looks in the first half, as a lot of the play took place in the central midfield. NMU recorded the only shot on goal from Tommaso Lami

Only seven total shots were attempted in the half, four from NMU and three from PNW. A total of 19 fouls (three yellow cards) happened in the half.

Second Half
The Pride scored in the 55th minute. After causing an NMU turnover, PNW put together a string of passes, as Christian Booth found Pau Aran in the box, and he turned and fired the ball low right past the goalkeeper.

PNW built on their lead nine minutes later, as a shot by Arnas Miskinis was redirected over NMU's keeper and into the net.

Despite outshooting PNW 10-8 in the half, NMU surrendered two goals and fell by a pair, 2-0.

A Look at the Stats
  • NMU led in shots 14-11 and shots on goal 6-4.
  • The Wilcats also led in corners, 6-4.
  • Philipp Rimmler and Tommaso Lami each had four total shots and two on goal.
