High Scoring Affair Not Enough For NMU Women’s Basketball

MARQUETTE, Mich.- The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team played host to Northwood University in an early Saturday affair. 

Back and forth matchup was not enough for the 'Cats, falling just short by a score of 78-75.
 
FIRST QUARTER

Freshman Ana Rhude got the 'Cats going, off a bounce pass from fellow freshman Mackenzie Holzwart.  

Freshman Vivianne Jende powered her way into the paint, dropping in a floater and drawing a possible three point play that she later succeeded on. 

After a brief commercial timeout, Junior Emily Mueller dropped a mid-range jumper over a Timberwolves defender, pushing the 'Cats lead to six. 

Northern took the first quarter by a score of 21-18, knocking down 100-percent of their shots from the charity stripe. 

SECOND QUARTER

Freshman guard Taya Stevenson put down a three-pointer from the top of the arc, after Sophomore Samantha Potter generated space off a pass. 

Northern continued to battle back and forth with Northwood, as senior Elizabeth Lutz battled her way into the paint, generating a three-point play. 

Vivianne Jende continued to add to the scoresheet, backing the Timberwolves defender deep into the paint and floating it in to bring the Timberwolves lead to within two. 

Northwood led the 'Cats by a score of 41-37, with NMU continuing their success at the free-throw line. 

AT THE HALF

Vivianne Jende finds herself above the rest, with a team high 12 points, shooting 66.7-percent from the field. 

Mackenzie Holzwart leads the team in assists with three, and total rebounds with four. 

Northern spent a majority of the first half with the lead, controlling the game for a total of 10:11. 

THIRD QUARTER

Makaylee Kuhn opened the 3rd quarter scoring for the 'Cats with a short jumper off a dish from Ana Rhude

Elizabeth Lutz was dominant in the offensive zone, tip-toeing on the line to save a ball and putting up a three from the corner to bring Northwood's lead to within reach. 

Kuhn walked up and dished out a bounce pass through a slew of Timberwolves defenders to Lutz for a put away lay-up.

Northwood pulls away with the lead to finish out the third quarter, Timberwolves lead 61-56. 

FOURTH QUARTER

Taya Stevenson found her way onto the charity stripe, knocking down every shot on a three -point play, 'Cats led 64-61.

The 'Cats and the Timberwolves battled back and forth, both itching for control in the game. With five minutes to play, the game stood at 68 apiece. 

Emily Mueller showed her strength, pushing her way into the paint and pulling up for a mid-range jumper. 

With just nine seconds left and the Wildcats down by a score of 78-75, head coach Troy Mattson called a timeout.

After a tough matchup, NMU lost by a slim margin of 78-75.  

STAT LEADERS

Emily Mueller led the team with 18 points in 24 minutes of play. Mueller shot 61.5-percent from the field. 

Makaylee Kuhn helped the 'Cats with a team high four assists, in 32 minutes of play. 

Ana Rhude was a force on defense, leading the team in blocks with two.

NMU closes out their four game home stand as they face off against U.P foe Michigan Technological University on Monday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m..
