Men’s Basketball Back at the Berry to Begin Four Game Homestand

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Men's Basketball team continues conference action this week, beginning with a Thursday (Jan. 20) matchup with Davenport at 7:45 p.m. The Wildcats will then welcome the Lakers of Grand Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 22) with a scheduled tip-off set for 1:15 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

The Wildcats were downstate for a pair of GLIAC games this past weekend. Northern dropped a close contest at Saginaw Valley State, 87-85. The 'Cats followed it up with a big 88-78 victory at Wayne State.

John Kerr led the team on the weekend, averaging 19 points including an impressive 21 point, 17 rebound performance at Wayne State.

STAT LEADERS

- Max Bjorklund leads the team in points this season, having scored 197 points (16.4 ppg). 

- John Kerr owns a 59.3 shooting percentage (73-123), good for 5th in the GLIAC. 
- John Kerr, who owns 40 offensive rebounds and 65 on the defensive side, leads the Wildcats on the glass with 105 total boards.

- Four 'Cats are averaging multiple assists each outing. Brian Parzych leads the way with 3.4 apg, while Max Bjorklund (2.6 apg), Sam Schultz (2.3 apg), and John Kerr (2.1 apg) follow closely behind. 

- Ben Wolf leads the way in blocks with 13 on the campaign. Parzych paces the team with 20 steals. 


SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Davenport is 7-4 with a 3-1 GLIAC mark. Guard Chris Rollins is averaging 15.3 PPG, a top-10 mark in the conference. 

Grand Valley State is 10-3 with a 4-2 record in conference play. Senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen is averaging a double-double, scoring 17.2 points/game (fifth in the GLIAC) and 10.2 rebounds/game (first in the GLIAC). 


MATCHUP HISTORY

NMU VS DU
The Wildcats have won four straight and are 7-2 against the Panthers dating back to 2018. The 'Cats won the weekend series last February with 66-54 and 100-70 wins at home. Max Bjorklund averaged 20.5 ppg in the two matchups. 

NMU has averaged 78.4 ppg over their last nine outings against Davenport. 

NMU VS GVSU 
The Wildcats are 5-5 in their last ten meetings with the Lakers, dropping the last three. Northern lost each game in the series at GVSU last season by an average of 5.5 points. Max Bjorklund averaged 15.5 points per game against Grand Valley a season ago.


A LOOK AHEAD

NMU will continue the homestand, as they host Northwood and Michigan Tech at the Berry Events Center to finish out the month of January.
