MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan University Wildcat hockey team fell 4-1 to the #1 Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday (Jan. 15) to drop to 13-9-1 (7-8-1 CCHA) on the season.

Minnesota State came out applying pressure early, scoring the game's first goal from Ondrej Pavel while also heading to their first power play. The 'Cats would kill off the penalty.

Less than eight minutes into the period, Cosgrove would head to the box for the 'Cats seventh penalty on the weekend. Cade Borchardt would capitalize for the visitors, giving Mankato an early 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats would get their first man-advantage with 9:07 on the clock in period one. Despite a few shots on goal, Northern couldn't take advantage of the power play and it remained a two score game.

NMU would get another power play opportunity a few minutes later. The 'Cats found multiple chances, but Mankato goaltender Dryden McKay came up with a couple of timely stops to keep it 2-0.

MSU would keep up the pressure and record the game's third goal off the stick of forward Ryan Sandelin. The 3-0 lead for the Mavericks would hold after 20:00 minutes of action. The Wildcats were out shot 13-7 in the period.

With 9:30 to go in the 2nd period, the Wildcats would head back to the power play looking to get on the board. The Maverick penalty kill would hold strong for the third time on the night.

Less than a minute after returning to full strength, Mankato would head back to the box for interference. On the ensuing faceoff, the 'Cats would be presented with a 5-on-3 as the Mavericks were penalized for a delay of game. However, it wouldn't take long for the whistle to blow again, as Cosgrove got called for tripping and the teams skated 4-on-3.

All three penalties would expire and the game remained 3-0. Northern would be called for their fourth penalty on the night as boarding was called on Van Unen. NMU held strong, killing off their third penalty of the game.

A scoreless second period found the Wildcats in a 3-0 hole with 20 minutes to play.

The Wildcats were presented with another power play opportunity just over five minutes into the 3rd period. This time, the 'Cats would capitalize. Alex Frye took a rebound off the pads of the goalie and lit the lamp for his third goal on the year. AJ Vanderbeck and Trevor Cosgrove got the assists.

Northern would head back on the man-advantage when the Mavericks were whistled for roughing after the whistle with 12:19 to go. AJ Vanderbeck rang one off the iron before MSU would fend off the Wildcat power play.

The Mavericks would score soon thereafter to make it 4-1 on a goal from Ryan Sandelin.

A few more penalties would be fought off by the teams en route to a 4-1 Wildcats loss.
