Box Score QUINCY, Ill. -- The Northern Michigan University lacrosse team saw its first win of the year on Sunday afternoon as they picked up a 16-7 non-conference road win over the Quincy Hawks.
Emily Renfrew and Madeline Bittell each scored goals for the Wildcats in the first three minutes of the game to put the first points on the board.
A free position goal from the Hawks at 24:48 in the first closed the NMU lead to just one.
Around seven minutes into the first period, Katelyn Mongold brought the Wildcats' lead back up to two with a goal. That was followed by Bittell and Mongold each scoring another goal to take a 5-1 lead.
Jessica Daniels joined in the NMU fun with a goal in the final 10 minutes of the opening period followed by another one less than two minutes later. Daniels' second goal was assisted by Emily Renfrew.
Renfrew, Shannon Walus, and Tess Kostelec also used the opening period to notch their first goals of the contest.
The score at the half was 10-3 after a Qunicy goal was scored with 19 seconds to go.
The Wildcat domination continued in the second half as NMU scored three straight goals to open the period. Bittell, Renfrew, and Kostelec each found the back of the net within two minutes of each other. Bittell's goal earned her one of three hat-tricks achieved for the Wildcats in the game.
After that point, each team would go on to score three more goals. Mongold and Daniels each earned hat-tricks with their final goals and Renfrew scored her team-high fourth of the contest on NMU's final goal.
The Wildcats had 43 total shots, with 34 being on goal. The visiting team also won the ground ball battle 32-19.
NMU goalie Cam Stilson picked up 9 saves in the net, playing the full contest.
Lacrosse returns to action Tuesday, March 2 in Missouri as they take on the Saints of Maryville. That game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
