MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team played host to Lewis University in the final GLIAC/GLVC tournament game of the weekend. The Wildcats pulled off the win with a dominating performance on the glass to push them to 2-0 on the season.
FIRST QUARTER
The Flyers started the game out with a three-point play off a layup and free throw but Northern would answer back as they went on a 12-point run. Freshman guard Taya Stevenon led the Wildcats with six points and two defensive rebounds.Â
NMU clamped up defensively holding Lewis to only eight points as they went 0-6 from behind the arch.Â
SECOND QUARTER
The Wildcats encountered foul trouble to start out the second quarter, allowing the Flyers to go 11/12 from the free throw line.Â
Northern controlled the glass in the second quarter grabbing three offensive boards and six defensive rebounds for a total of nine.Â
AT THE HALF
Stevenson,
Kayla Tierney, and
Mackenzie Holzwart led the 'Cats in total points with six a piece.
Junior forward Elena Aliax and Stevenson controlled the glass leading Northern in rebounds. NMU tallied 14 of their 27 points in the paint while grabbing a total of 18 rebounds to the Flyers 14.Â
THIRD QUARTER
Senior guard
Elizabeth Lutz started NMU out hot with a clutch three, beating the shot clock to push the 'Cats ahead of the Flyers.Â
Northern continued to keep it close, going 50 percent from the field, and winning the battle on the glass grabbing nine boards. Â Â
FOURTH QUARTER
NMU started out hot in the fourth quarter scoring eight points in the opening minutes taking the lead from Lewis.Â
The two teams battled it out until the very end with the 'Cats coming out on top in dominating fashion.Â
STAT LEADERSÂ
Sophomore guard
Makaylee Kuhn led Northern with a total of 13 points and shot 50 percent from the field.Holzwart was perfect from the field en route to an 11 point game.
Junior forward
Emily Mueller controlled the board tonight racking up a total of 10 rebounds.Â
Five separate Wildcats registered at least one steal in today's win. Â Â
NMU led the battle on the glass with 42 rebounds to the Flyers 22.Â
