Volleyball Falls to Huskies in Vandament Arena Tilt

MARQUETTE, Mich. - In a three set Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match, the Northern Michigan University volleyball team fell short to the No. 20 Michigan Technological University Huskies 3-0. 

FIRST SET 

The Wildcat's came out flying in the first set, as junior Lauren Van Remortel sent a non-recoverable serve over the net to put NMU up 1-0. The crowd went wild after the service ace.

The 'Cats battled to take the lead after starting the game with a 2-2 tie. The Huskies continued to put pressure on the Wildcats' back row, but the 'Cats were able to score four unanswered points, with kills by Jacqueline Smith, Olivia Webber, and Lizzy Stark, giving Northern the lead at 6-2. 

With three kills by NMU's outside hitter Jacqueline Smith, the 'Cats were able to rally 12 points, dropping the set 25-12. 

SECOND SET

Starting the second set, the 'Cats looked to capitalize, scoring three straight to open the set beginning with a Stark kill. 

When the teams hit a 5-5 tie, NMU took the advantage scoring another four unanswered points, with two big kills from Jacqueline Smith and a couple faults from the Huskies on the other side of the net, bringing the score to 9-5. 

The Wildcats fought hard but they trailed MTU till the final serve after the 10-9 point, putting the 'Cats down 25-17 at the end of set two. 

THIRD SET 

Early in the match's determining set, the Wildcats trailed 8-4, but following a momentum switching kill by Meghan Meyer, the 'Cats stood just a little taller on their toes. 

An undeniable effort by NMU helped them close the gap in the third set of play. The 'Cats went on a six point streak shifting the energy to the Wildcats' side of the court. Bringing the score to 21-15 in favor of the Huskies. 

In the end, MTU took set three 25-16, winning the match. 

STAT LEADERS 

Lizzy Stark led the team in kills with a total of nine during the three set match, making her the leading attacker for NMU. 

Close behind, Jacqueline Smith produced eight kills and totalled an NMU team-leading three service aces in tonight's match. 

Lauren Van Remortel carried the Wildcat team in assists with a total of 22. 

UP NEXT

Next weekend, the 'Cats take the court for two conference games at home in Vandament Arena. The Wildcats will face Lake Superior State University for another Upper Peninsula rivalry on Friday at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Northwood University comes to Marquette for a 2 p.m. match.
