Football Headed To The Dog Pound For A Tough Matchup

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University football team (3-5, 1-3 GLIAC) are hitting the road for a tough matchup against NCAA Division II's No. 1 ranked Ferris State University Bulldogs as they continue their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule.

LAST TIME OUT

Last week's matchup saw a strong Wildcats team compete with a nationally ranked opponent in the Lakers of Grand Valley State University. 

Sophomore quarterback Drake Davis led the 'Cats with 24 completions for 225 passing yards. Davis also threw for a touchdown. 

Freshman wide receiver Wyatt Davis would lead Northern with seven receptions for a total of 97 yards, which also included a touchdown.

QUARTERBACK PLAY

Sophomore Drake Davis is third among GLIAC quarterbacks in both passing touchdowns with nine and in passing yards per game with an average of 170.

Davis is now first in the GLIAC with 1,360 passing yards on the season and is first in the GLIAC with 128 completions on 212 attempts. Davis has also rushed for a total of 311 yards.  

Junior wide receiver Isaiah Popp shocked the Superior Dome as he completed a pass on a fake field goal attempt in Saturday's game. Popp is the only Wildcat besides Drake Davis to throw for a touchdown this year. 

RECEIVING 'CATS

Freshman Wyatt Davis had a day against Grand Valley with 97 total yards and one touchdown on seven receptions. Davis has made his way into the GLIAC top ten for yards per game with 47.3, while totaling 378 yards on the season

STRONG DEFENSE

Freshman Will Borchert ranks second in the GLIAC for defense with a total of 79 tackles, averaging 9.9 per game. Borchert would have a strong performance against the Lakers racking up 11 total tackles. Borchert ranks 17th in DII for total tackles.  

Senior Andre Whitley ranks third behind Borchert the GLIAC for defense with a total of 70 tackles for an average of 8.8 per game. He also has three sacks on the year. Whitley would tally up eight total tackles against Grand Valley. 

Junior John McMullen made his way up to number two in the GLIAC for defense with a total of six sacks.  

Senior Brady Hanson would have a great outing as he would total up nine tackles on the day with one interception resulting in a 13-yard return. 

Sophomore Tavion McCarthy continues to dominate on defense as he ranks in the top 10 for passes defended.   

NMU VS FERRIS STATE

The Wildcats and Bulldogs have had a history of playing each other since 1947, most recently in 2019. The two teams have tallied a total of 257 points combined in the last 10 years.
