Football Ready for Storied U.P. Rivalry

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan University football team (3-3, 1-1 GLIAC) is scheduled to play U.P. rivals Michigan Technological University (3-2, 2-0 GLIAC) for the Miner's Cup at the Superior Dome in Marquette on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. continuing their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule.

Wildcat   LAST TIME OUT

Last week's matchup saw a strong Wildcats team fall short 18-13 to Davenport University.

Junior defensive back Antonio Howard Jr. led the defense with a total of 12 tackles on the day along with two kickoff returns averaging 23.5 yards.

Recent breakout running back DJ Stewart rushed a total of 10 times bringing his season total rushing yards to 118. Stewart is also averaging 6.4 yards a carry.

Wildcat   QUARTERBACK PLAY

Sophomore Drake Davis is tied for second among GLIAC quarterbacks in passing touchdowns with seven and is fifth in passing yards per game with an average of 150.8.

Davis is now up to 905 passing yards on the season and first in the GLIAC with 87 completions on 150 attempts. Drake is also rushing for a total of 273 yards with an average of 45.5 per game.  

Wildcat   RUNNING 'CATS

Sophomore running back Tyshon King continues to dominate the NMU rushing game with a total of 294 yards placing him fourth in the GLIAC. He is averaging a total of 6.7 yards per carry making him second in the GLIAC.

Junior Tyquan Cox is the top kickoff returner for the Wildcats with a total of 295 yards on 30 receptions. Cox, who also takes snaps as the running back, holds a total of 434 all-purpose yards averaging 72.3 yards per game. 

Wildcat   STRONG DEFENSE

Freshman Will Borchert ranks first in the GLIAC for defense with a total of 58 tackles, averaging 9.7 per game. Borchert also ranks in the top 25 for NCAA Division II in total tackles.

Senior Andre Whitley also ranks in the top five in the GLIAC for defense with a total of 52 tackles for an average of 8.7 per game. He also has 2.5 sacks on the year. 

Junior John McMullen is tied for fourth in the GLIAC for defense with a total of four sacks.

Sophomore Antonio Howard Jr. ranks in the GLIAC top 10 in total tackles having 41 on the year, averaging 6.8 per game, along with one forced fumble.

Wildcat   NMU VS MICHIGAN TECH

The Wildcat and Husky football programs have a storied rivalry that dates back all the way back to 1920 making this the 93rd matchup in program history. The 'Cats have outscored the Huskies by a total of 1,520 points to Tech's 1,412.
