Volleyball Collects 3-1 Victory Over Cedarville at Conference Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. –  Northern Michigan University Volleyball traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the Midwest Region Conference Crossover and defeated Cedarville University 3-1 in their first match of the weekend.

 SET SCORES

In the first set, the teams kept it close as they forced 13 ties and neither team gain a lead by more than three points, but NMU held on to capture a 26-24 first set victory.

The second set saw the Wildcats jump out to a quick 15-3 lead and powered to a 25-12 victory. Both teams stayed close for the early part of the third set, but NMU eventually pulled ahead 16-10. However, the Yellow Jackets rallied back to claim a 26-24 victory.

The Wildcats jumped out early again and took a 13-5 lead as they cruised to a 25-10 set win and 3-1 match victory.

  LEADING THE WAY

Senior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) led the Wildcats with 12 kills and 11 digs. Junior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis./De Pere) tied Monsma with 12 kils to lead the Wildcats and also led the defense with five block.

During the match, Monsma became the 17th player in program history to achieve 1,000 digs in her career.

  AIDING THE ATTACK

 Senior Jessica Skonning (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) chipped in with eight kills to aid the offensive attack. Senior Maggie Liebeck (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) added eight to the effort.

Senior setter Lynzi Svoboda (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest) finished with 36 assists for the match.

Freshman Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) paced the team with four aces to tie her career high. Senior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and junior Gabriela Martinez (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista/Rio Piedras) both contributed two aces.

  THE DEFENSE

Braunschweig finished the match with 10 digs to finish begin Monsma for the team lead. Svoboda tallied nine while Martinez notched eight with Yacko adding seven.

At the net, Monsma had three blocks to add to her day with Liebeck posting two blocks. 

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats move to 12-8 on the season while Cedarville is now 8-13. NMU returns to action Saturday for the their second match of the Crossover to play the University of Southern Indiana at 10 a.m. They will finish the weekend with Missouri University of Science & Technology.
