Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Volleyball team for Northern Michigan University defeated Lake Superior State University for the 24th straight time, winning Saturday's Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 3-0. With the sweep, the Wildcats have won 16 of the 24 with sweeps.
The first set remained close, as the teams were forced to extend the set, but NMU eventually captured a 28-26 opening set win. The second set saw the Wildcats winning 25-15 and they followed it with a 25-21 third set to win the match.
Senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Wisc.) paced the offense with 10 kills and was joined by freshman Leticia Antunes's (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) eight. Junior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) added seven and senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.) finished with six.
Senior Jamie Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) tallied 32 assists in the match. Monsma and junior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley/Cape Fear CC) both posted a team-high two aces.
On the defensive side, Antunes led the Wildcats with 14 digs. Monsma chipped in with 10 while Braunschweig totaled nine. Sophomore Gabriela Martinez (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista/Rio Piedras) contributed eight.
Antunes also tied with redshirt sophomore Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wisc./De Pere) for a team-best two solo blocks. Kuehn ended the match tied with Whitehead and Chosa with four total blocks.
With the win, NMU moves to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC. Lake Superior State fell to 1-7 overall, 0-2 in league play. The Wildcats now return to action quickly, as they head to Michigan Technical University Tuesday for another GLIAC matchup.
