Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (0-5, 0-0 GLIAC) were defeated in the second overtime period by Saginaw Valley State University (4-1, 0-0 GIAC) Friday afternoon on their home turf.
Saginaw Valley got the scoring started in the 26th minute to take the 1-0 advantage. Just over six minutes later, freshman defender Kaitlynn Benson (Windsor, Ontario) scored the first Wildcat goal of the weekend in the 32nd minute with the assist being credited to freshman forward Jenna Halonen (Howell, Michigan)
All knotted up through the halftime intermission, the Cardinals took the lead back in the 46th minute. Halonen recorded her second goal of the season in the 76th minute on a deep ball from senior midfielder Abby Cook (DeWitt, Michigan). The SVSU goalkeeper left the box allowing Halonen to pop the ball over the keeper's tying the game at two.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime period with NMU taking two shots, while the Cardinals took one of their own. The Wildcats did not take a shot in the second, while the winning goal came in the 106th minute of play. SVSU's Valentina Giambanco scored her second goal of the contests to give the Cardinals the sudden-death victory
Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) brought her season total up to 26 saves in five games played. For the contests, SVSU took 22 shots, nine on goal, while Northern Michigan took seven total shots.
Next up for the Wildcats is Northwood University Sunday at 4 p.m. The Timberwolves currently sit at 2-2 (0-0 GLIAC) but are scheduled to take on Michigan Tech University Friday evening.
